I first tried Zinfandel when I went to America and I fell in love. Something about this grape has always held a place in my mind. But it is quite hard to find in Australia! So when I was sent some wines from Roenfeldt Hill Wines to try, I couldn’t wait to give their Zinfandel blends a go!

About Roenfeldt Hill Wines

Roenfeldt Hill Wines ZSGM 2017

I hadn’t heard of Roenfeldt Hill Wines before so I was very excited to try their wines. The Roennfeldts, (later simplified by some of the family to Roenfeldt) are sixth-generation descendants of Christian Heinrich and Louisa Catharina Roennfeldt, who migrated to South Australia from Cropelin, Germany, in 1849. They were one of the first 100 families to settle in the Barossa Valley after escaping religious persecution.

Since then, they have their own 16 years established vineyard, and also source grapes from the old family vineyard. They grow a range of varieties from Shiraz and Cab Sav to Zinfandel and Grenache, as well as Riesling from the Eden Valley. Today, Wany and Sandy work the soil of their mixed farm.

They are one of the few growers of Zinfandel in South Australia and this is one of Wayne’s favourite varieties to work with. Their vineyard is small with a production of less than 2 tonne per acre with exceptional quality and flavour. Although their grapes are sought after by the top wineries in the Barossa, very little is sold as they need it for their wines!

What I loved about the Roenfeldt Hill Wines ZSGM 2017

Roenfeldt Hill Wines ZSGM 2017

I absolutely loved the Roenfeldt Hill Wines ZSGM 2017. An ode to their first tractor a Zetor 35-45, this wine has been basket-pressed before being placed in French and American Oak for 32 months. It is a blend of Zinfandel, Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro offering a wealth of flavours.

This wine is a heavy hitter at 15.8% but it drunk surprisingly smooth. I loved how spicy, complex and flavoursome this wine was. Flavours of blackcurrant, cherry and spice came together for a taste sensation that was surprisingly balanced. I couldn’t believe how well the flavours worked together in this unique blend. It was bold yet not too tannic, soft yet had enough acidity to balance it out. The finish was also nice and long which made it delectable to sip on and enjoy!

What to enjoy it with

The Roenfeldt Hill Wines ZSGM 2017 is quite full-bodied and so is great when paired with food. Those complex flavours really lend themselves to food. That’s why I think this wine would be a perfect one to enjoy over a nice dinner. As it is an interesting blend as well it would make for great conversation!

Food-wise I don’t think you could go past slow-roasted lamb or beef. The flavours in these dishes would marry up perfectly to this wine.

In summary: Roenfeldt Hill Wines ZSGM 2017

The Roenfeldt Hill Wines ZSGM 2017 is a unique blend that offers something unique to what you’ll normally find coming out of the Barossa. It was beautifully balanced, complex yet smooth and not too heavy despite it’s abv. This wine was an absolutely delight to enjoy with food.
