I haven’t tried many wines from Gundagai, so I was very excited to receive a selection of wines from Tumblong Hills to check out! With so many options, it was hard to know where to begin. But they had plenty of Italian varietals that immediately caught my eye, and it had been a while since I had a Barbera, so I figured why not start there. And I am so glad I did, because this wine is simply delicious!

If you’re after a Barbera that punches well above its price tag, this is the one to grab. The Tumblong Hills Table of Plenty Barbera 2023 is bright, plush and made for sharing, exactly the red you want open on the table while everyone’s still catching up over the first course.

In the glass, you’ll find blueberry and dark plum leading the way, with cherry fruit running underneath layers of pepper and baking spice. It’s medium-bodied and juicy, but it has a savoury backbone too, with clove and vanilla peeking through, ripe but gentle tannins, and a fresh line of acidity that keeps every sip lively rather than heavy.

This isn’t a wine to overthink. It’s perfect for pizza nights, pasta bakes, grilled sausages and charcuterie boards. Basically anything you’d put out for a proper feast with friends. Easy to drink, easy to love, and a genuinely great value pick from Gundagai.

About Tumblong Hills

Tumblong Hills is based in Gundagai, one of Australia’s newest wine regions, tucked into the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. The vineyard benefits from volcanic soils, mountain water and cool alpine breezes, with the Murrumbidgee River winding through the surrounding farmland. It’s a region still finding its feet on the wine map, but one that’s clearly got the natural conditions to produce something special.

Behind the wines is winegrower Simon Robertson, whose family has been growing grapes in the region for decades, going back to his father planting some of the area’s first vines in the 1960s. Simon’s approach leans heavily on soil health, using organic-rich topsoil and natural methods rather than fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides, with sheep grazing the vineyard pastures and even the local kangaroos playing their part. It all feeds into wines that feel like a genuine reflection of the land they come from, balanced, characterful and made with a real sense of place.
