Wine review: Meteora Vineyard Tempranillo 2025

Last month my husband and I visited Meteora Vineyard for the first time while exploring the Granite Belt, and I was blown away by how beautiful it was. So I was thrilled when they sent me their latest release of Mediterranean varieties, which I didn’t get to try on our trip! I started with the Meteora Vineyard Tempranillo 2025, and we absolutely loved it. We enjoyed it with Middle Eastern lamb meatballs, and the bold, savoury style of this wine was a perfect match.

The Meteora Vineyard Tempranillo 2025 is bold in colour and unmistakably structured, made in a traditional Crianza style with Australian flair. That simply means it’s had time in oak to build flavour and structure, in this case twelve months in a mix of French and American barrels. On the nose, you’ll find dark cherry, blackberry and plum, layered with vanilla, cedar and tobacco leaf from the oak. The palate is rich and savoury, with concentrated black fruit and firm, chewy tannins that give it real depth and longevity.

The fruit and oak work beautifully together, leading to a long, polished finish with lingering spice and earthy complexity. It’s a red that loves food, so think lamb, burgers, tapas or a hearty pasta. If you’re after a bold, savoury red with plenty of personality, the Meteora Vineyard Tempranillo 2025 is well worth adding to your list.

About Meteora Vineyard

Meteora has one of those stories that makes you love a winery even more. The Catsoulis family never set out to buy a vineyard, but after a chance weekend in the country, Andrew and Karen fell head over heels for Ballandean and the Granite Belt. They were drawn in by the dramatic granite landscapes, the elevated climate, four distinct seasons and the strong sense of community, and it all felt a little bit magical. Over the past six years, they’ve transformed a once-neglected farm into a flourishing vineyard and destination, with the dream of creating a generational legacy of estate-grown, single-vineyard wines, all grown, produced and shared on-site.

The name has a lovely story behind it too. Meteora is inspired by the famous monasteries and rock formations in Greece, as well as the iconic Gold Coast building Andrew’s father constructed under the same name in the 1970s, so it’s a tribute to the family’s Greek heritage. Today, the estate spans a state-of-the-art winery, cellar door and restaurant, plus Queensland’s first wine cave, with luxury accommodation and more experiences still to come. But at its heart, Meteora is still a family project, created to share great wine, hospitality and the beauty of the Granite Belt for generations to come.
