Wine review: Yering Station Reserve Pinot Noir 2024

The Yering Station Reserve Pinot Noir is not a wine that gets made every year. Only the best vintages and the best parcels of fruit make the cut, which means when it does appear, and if the 2024 is anything to go off, it’s worth paying attention. This is their flagship Pinot Noir, and it shows: rich and deeply complex, yet fine-boned and elegant in that way only cool-climate Pinot can pull off. If you love wines that manage to be both generous and refined at the same time, this one is for you. I love a good Yarra Valley Pinot, and this one definitely knocked my socks off! Having visited Yering Station a few times, this has to be one of my favourite wines I’ve enjoyed from them so far.

The nose is lively and inviting, with raspberries, cherries and a hint of spice. On the palate, cherry and strawberry are carried through by fine spice and velvet tannin, and the wine keeps evolving in the glass with a lovely earthy complexity. The finish is silky and long, and the whole thing manages to feel both elegant and powerful at once. It’s drinking beautifully right now alongside duck, salmon, or a mushroom-based dish, but with 8 or more years of cellaring potential, this is also one to tuck away if you have the patience. It’s certainly a special-occasion wine, but it’s sure to make the occasion even more special when you do open it!

About Yering Station

Yering Station is Victoria’s very first vineyard, with vines going all the way back to 1838. Established by the pioneering Ryrie brothers and now lovingly stewarded by the Rathbone family since 1996, this is a place with almost two centuries of history woven into every bottle. Spread across five sites in the Yarra Glen and Coldstream sub-regions, the vineyards are managed with a combination of precision viticulture technology and a lot of careful hands-on work, all in pursuit of the best possible fruit.

The Yarra Valley is widely considered Australia’s premier cool climate wine region, and Yering Station sits right at the heart of it. The focus here is on expressive, varietally true wines that reflect the place they come from, and that reputation has earned them admirers well beyond Australia.
