Wine review: Yering Station 2024 Reserve Shiraz Viognier

The Yering Station 2024 Reserve Shiraz Viognier is one of those wines that makes you go “ooh” the second you pop the cork! This is the winery’s flagship red, only made in the very best years from the very best parcels of fruit, and it shows. It’s a Shiraz with 3% Viognier (a white grape) co-fermented in, a clever trick that adds a gorgeous floral lift. Then it spends 17 months in French oak, with only 14% of it new, so the fruit stays the star. On the nose, it’s so pretty, with dark cherry, plum and mulberry, plus violets, rose petals, cocoa and a little hint of Black Forest cake.

Take a sip, and it’s just as exciting. The palate is rich, velvety and silky, with juicy dark berries and a touch of anise and liquorice spice. The tannins (that drying feeling you sometimes get from reds) are firm but so fine that the wine just glides along, while the Viognier keeps everything feeling bright and lifted. The finish is long and savoury, and you’ll be happily savouring it long after your last sip. This one is delicious to drink right now, but if you’re the patient type, it will happily sit in your cellar for a few years and reward you for it.

About Yering Station

Yering Station is Victoria’s first vineyard, with vines going back to 1838. Established by the pioneering Ryrie brothers and now lovingly stewarded by the Rathbone family since 1996, this is a place with almost two centuries of history woven into every bottle. Spread across five sites in the Yarra Glen and Coldstream sub-regions, the vineyards are managed with precision viticulture technology and careful hands-on work, all in pursuit of the best possible fruit.

The Yarra Valley is widely considered Australia’s premier cool-climate wine region, and Yering Station sits at its heart. The focus here is on expressive, varietally true wines that reflect the place they come from, and that reputation has earned them admirers well beyond Australia.
