If you love a Barossa Shiraz then I have the Shiraz for you. I was recently sent wines from Kurtz Family Vineyards and they’ve all been winners. Not only are they affordable but they seriously punch above their weight in terms of flavour. I sometimes find Barossa Shiraz too heavy for me but this Boundary Row Shiraz was just plain delicious.

About Kurtz Family Vineyards

Kurtz Family Vineyards Boundary Road Shiraz 2018

Kurtz Family Vineyards has a rich history dating back to the 1930s where Steven Kurtz’s Great Grandfather began growing grapes on the very same block that is still worked today in the Light Pass subregion. This was passed down through the generations and now Steven carries on the legacy.

The Kurtz Family Vineyards Boundary Row Shiraz 2018 is from the range named after the Barossa tradition of using vine rows rather than fences to distinguish owners, with the fruit shared between the owners.

What I loved about the Kurtz Family Vineyards Boundary Road Shiraz 2017

The Kurtz Family Vineyards Boundary Road Shiraz 2017 seriously delivers on flavour. In the glass, the wine is rich purple, and on the nose, I got notes of blackberry, plum and a bit of savoury herb. There was also a nice spice to the profile which added a delicious complexity.

The palate was where I think this wine really shines. It’s rich and full with juiciness upfront balanced out by those savoury notes. Those flavours of plum, blackberry and blueberry came into play along with complex earthy notes and spice. I also got a hint of chocolate which really rounded out the wine and cut through some of that fruit-forward flavour. The wine finishes long with a really smooth texture and a nicely balanced tannin. I really loved how complex this wine was yet oh so smooth and balanced. It was the kind of wine you could keep sipping and continue to unpack.

The Kurtz Family Vineyards Boundary Road Shiraz 2017 could easily be enjoyed now or you could cellar it for a few years to allow the flavours to develop. I think this wine is only going to continue improving as time goes on!
