Wine review: Knappstein Unearthed Sangiovese 2025

Recently, I tried the Knappstein Unearthed Sangiovese 2025, and it was an absolute delight to drink. I can’t say I’ve ever had Sangiovese from the Clare Valley before, and now that I have, I want to try more! Part of Knappstein’s brand new Unearthed range, which takes classic European varietals and gives them a fresh Clare Valley spin, this Sangiovese is fun, vibrant, and full of life. It’s so great to explore something beyond the familiar from Knappstein and Clare Valley, and this wine is the perfect delicious food wine.

The colour is a gorgeous, vivid crimson, and the aromas that follow are just as inviting: think fresh cherries, strawberry, and blackberry. It’s bright, it’s enchanting, and it’s the kind of wine that makes you want to pour another glass before you’ve even finished the first. On the palate, the Knappstein Unearthed Sangiovese 2025 just delivers. It’s bursting with juicy fruit flavour and has a zippy, high-energy acidity that keeps it feeling fresh and lively from start to finish. There are those classic dried herb notes that you often find in Sangiovese, alongside a nice hint of earthiness that balances out the juicy fruit notes. The best part? You don’t need to wait or overthink it. This wine is ready to drink right now, and it’s all the better for it. It’s a brilliant match for anything passata-based, a classic pasta, a slow-cooked ragu, a lazy pizza night. But really, it’s the kind of bottle you’ll find a reason to open any night of the week.

About Knappstein

Knappstein Wines has been one of the Clare Valley’s most beloved wineries since 1974, and it’s not hard to see why. From day one, the philosophy has been simple: let the incredible fruit from their local vineyards do the talking. Their winemakers are passionate guardians of the vines, bringing real attention to detail and love for what they do to every bottle they produce. The result? A beautiful range of medium-bodied, fruit-driven wines that are as enjoyable to drink now as they are impressive with a little time in the cellar. It’s this dedication to quality and a deep respect for their individual vineyard sites that has earned Knappstein its reputation as one of Australia’s leading premium wine brands.

And the setting? Just as special as the wines themselves. Knappstein’s cellar door and winery are housed in the original Enterprise Brewery building, built all the way back in 1878 and a heritage-listed landmark right in the heart of Clare township. It’s a gorgeous slice of history that perfectly reflects everything Knappstein stands for: a deep connection to place, a respect for the past, and an excitement for what’s still to come.
