Wine review: Jardin d’Aromes Rosé

If there’s one wine that’s guaranteed to make you feel like you’re sitting in a sun-drenched French garden, it’s the Jardin D’Aromes Rosé by Jean-Claude Mas. This is the kind of bottle that you want to keep. The design is genuinely gorgeous, with a beautiful honeycomb pattern that’s actually a sweet tribute to the bees that call Jean-Claude’s vineyards home. And yes, he really does have beehives on his estate! Jean-Claude is passionate about looking after the environment around him, and that care and attention shine through in every sip. Sourced from the Languedoc region in the south of France, this Rosé has all the pale, pretty elegance of its Provençal neighbours and is really affordable too!

From the moment you pour it, the Jardin D’Aromes Rosé is just pure joy in a glass. It’s a gorgeous pale salmon colour, and the aromas are absolutely lovely. Think fresh strawberries, raspberries, rose petals and a little hint of spice. On the palate, it’s bright, refreshing and bursting with summer berries, with a crisp, dry finish that keeps things feeling light and lively. It’s brilliant as an aperitif with some dips and bread, but it also holds its own beautifully alongside prawns, grilled fish or a shared platter with friends. Really, though, the best way to enjoy this one is chilled, outside, with good company and absolutely nowhere to be.

About Jean-Claude Mas

Behind every great wine is a great story, and Jean-Claude Mas is no different. It started at age three when he escaped from his mum during harvest and ran 2.5 kilometres solo to find his grandfather in the cellar. Wine followed him everywhere he went, whether he was setting up wine clubs in northern France, importing organic wines in England, or promoting French food and wine in Miami. There was even a brief flirtation with car and motorbike racing, but his love for wine always won out.

By the 1990s, Jean-Claude was back where he belonged. Time spent in Bordeaux and a game-changing encounter with celebrated Italian winemaker Giorgio Grai helped shape the winemaker he would become. He returned to his family roots in the Languedoc and never looked back. Today, he’s widely celebrated as a pioneer of the New Languedoc, a region with over 2,000 years of winemaking history that Jean-Claude has made it his mission to bring back into the spotlight.
