Perfect for BBQs with friends.

After being sent the latest releases from Tyrrells recently, I couldn’t wait to dive in. I’ve had a few of their wines over the years but not as many as I would have liked. Given they are so famous I was surprised when, on reflection, I realised they haven’t been a staple in our house. But now I get the opportunity to change that and after trying the wines change it I will!

Actually, it is funny, they may not be a regular wine in our household, but our wine room actually has a vintage Tyrrells sign in it! I was given it for a birthday one year and I have it hanging on the wall. Maybe all this time I knew I was going to love their wines?

The Hunter Valley is renowned for its Shiraz and so I thought what better place to start (apart from their Semillon of course) than with the Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Shiraz 2019?

About Tyrrell’s

Tyrells is a bit of an Aussie institution from the Hunter Valley, and it is easy to see why! Their rich history dates all the way back to 1858 when Edward Tyrell arrived in the Hunter Valley and planted Shiraz and Semillon.

160 plus years on, Tyrells has been a constant in both the Hunter Valley and Australian wine industries. From pioneering wine varieties to helping establish Hunter Valley Semillon as one of the world’s most iconic wines. Now they have deep respect for their foundations whilst looking to the future.

What I loved about Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Shiraz

The Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Shiraz 2019 is a seriously delicious wine and the best part? It is under $20 a bottle and ready to drink now! This is something you don’t often find with Shiraz, so if you’re looking for a wine for your Christmas feast this might be the one!

This wine is a classic Hunter Valley style and medium-bodied. It’s a bit lighter than what you might be used to if you are a regular drinker of those jammy styles of Shiraz from the Barossa. But even though it is light, it is still deceptively rich yet lively and fresh.

On the nose, I got a hit of red fruits and blackberries along with beautiful spice. This followed through into a juicy palate that was balanced out by soft, savoury tannins. The wine is complex yet beautifully balanced and seriously tasty.

What to enjoy it with

As it isn’t too heavy you could easily enjoy it with hard cheeses and charcuterie before a meal. But it would also really lend itself to a classic Summer BBQ or slow-roasted meats. At under $20 a bottle, you don’t need to think too much about cracking it open. It would be a perfect wine to bring along to a BBQ with friends.
