I enjoyed the Richard Hamilton single-vineyard wines so much when I was sent them that I didn’t realise I still had one left to try. I couldn’t believe my luck when I stumbled across this one. How I managed to keep it from myself and my husband is a mystery! When we cracked it open I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to share my review with you all so you might be inspired to try it too.

I haven’t tried many Mourvèdre on their own (usually in a blend of GSM), but it grows really well in McLaren Vale and Richard Hamilton have jumped on this. It’s one of the last grapes to ripen along with Grenache. They chose low yielding vines to add complexity to the wine itself, and aged in older barrels to gain complexity but not detract from the fruit. Sound tasty? Well, read on to find out why I loved this wine!

What I loved about the Richard Hamilton Farm Twelve Mourvèdre 2020

The Richard Hamilton Farm Twelve Mourvèdre 2020 is a seriously delicious wine full of dark, rich flavours. In the glass, it is vibrant red and on the nose, I got beautiful rich, earthy notes alongside cherry and a touch of spice. This followed through into the palate which was fruit-forward with cherry and mulberry yet balanced by oak influence. I loved how textured this wine was without overwhelming tannins. It lingers long after you take a sip too. I loved unpacking this wine sip after sip. Those rich and earthy flavours are utterly Moorish!

What I loved about this wine was that it could be cellared for a few more years to develop more complexity. But if you like your wines more fresh and vibrant, it is still drinking beautifully now. It’s really up to you what you want to do. I love finding wines where you have a choice because sometimes you really don’t want to wait!

What to enjoy it with

Richard Hamilton Farm Twelve Mourvèdre

The Richard Hamilton Farm Twelve Mourvèdre 2020 is a rich and full-bodied wine so is best paired with food. This wine would be a great pair to a nice slow-cooked meal. Think lamb casserole or braised meat. Those kinds of meals that take hours to cook and need a good, rich wine to really take them to the next level. Otherwise gamey meats or a rich risotto would also be a great combination with this beautiful food wine.
