This week I wanted to review a beautiful prosecco that I tried on the weekend. After looking it up for the blog, I realised I got it for a steal in a sale, as it is worth more than what I’d normally pay for a prosecco. Call me cheap, but I feel that prosecco should never cost too much. I don’t know why I have this perception. Perhaps it is that I’ve tried a lot of them and I find you can get some really great ones for under $20 that don’t taste too dissimilar to those that are a bit more expensive.

I have my favourite brands that I will always splurge on (for another blog post, I promise), but when I am just catching up with friends and want an easy drinking prosecco, I won’t spend too much on it, as I know I can get the quality without spending the dosh.

Well, this prosecco might have just changed my mind. It was absolutely delicious, and I feel so much better about it knowing that I got a bargain on it! Usually it is about $30 at Dan Murphy’s, but I got it at BWS for about $15! Often the deals on wine aren’t really that good, but half price is a win in my books! The price also meant I tried a different prosecco to my usual go-to’s at the bottle shop, and I am really glad I tried something new.

There’s something about prosecco

I’m not sure why I love prosecco so much, but it is definitely my sparkling of choice. Don’t get me wrong, I am incredibly partial to champagne, but unfortunately I only have the budget for special occasions (one day I hope I have a champagne fridge like Ab Fab but I feel like this is a little way off). I know a few people who completely hate prosecco and would never drink it, but I don’t know why! It is such a good drink, and I honestly prefer it to a lot of sparkling wines from Australia and New Zealand. It is also a great option for when you don’t have something huge to celebrate, but you still want something fancy to drink. I know I often celebrate the end of the week with a tasty prosecco!

Why I loved it

The one I tried was the Tenuta Ca’bolani Prosecco. Now it doesn’t have a fancy label, but it is classically Italian: simple, to the point, and often a sign of a great Italian wine. As a general rule some of my favourite Italian drops have really basic labels, so don’t let the sparkly bright ones fool you in the bottle shop! The prosecco is from Italy and has a DOC rating, meaning that it is a great example of the wine of the region. I always look for Italian wines with this label or the DOCG as a general rule, as I know they will be good, or at least show the region’s wines.

The reason I loved this prosecco so much was how light and fruity it was. Prosecco can be quite dry, but this definitely wasn’t. It was very easy to drink, and nice and refreshing on a hot afternoon. I loved how fresh the flavours were, it really complemented the bubbles and made for a bit of a party in your mouth! This prosecco was great on its own, but would also lend itself to Aperol spritz really easily. I think because it wasn’t full of punchy flavours, you could easily mix it into any sparkling cocktail and get a great result. For me, I enjoyed drinking it so much on its own, I wouldn’t bother, and just enjoy the prosecco for the drink that it is.

What to enjoy it with

It was the perfect way to round up the afternoon, enjoying a few drinks with friends. It is the perfect afternoon drink as it was so light, and meant you didn’t really need to pair it with food. If you were to though, I would recommend a hard cheese or some olives. Do as the Italians do and enjoy some aperitivo!
