This week I wanted to share with you a wine all the way from the King Valley! I am yet to visit the King Valley but it is high up on my list, being the home of Italian wine in Australia. I mean, you can find it in other regions, but the King Valley is renowned for its Prosecco and Sangiovese, so you know you’re going to have a good time!

There are so many good wines to drink out there, and many are from smaller producers that are trying to weather the current COVID-19 crisis. I’m focusing on highlighting these producers at the moment so that more of us wine drinkers can connect with those incredible winemakers we can’t go to the cellar doors for at the moment. So if this wine seems like something that would be up your alley, consider supporting our locals! I mean it’s one thing buying wine from Italy but wait until you taste this Sangiovese!

The Eddie McDougall Wines Sangiovese 2016 is dark and mysterious

Eddie McDougall Wines was established in 2007. Eddie had the vision to produce wines outside of the mainstream. They source grapes from the best regions and focus on producing both classical and alternative wine styles. Their wines are award-winning for their creativity and each region’s wine has its own unique flair.

Eddie McDougall Wines has a few options when it comes to the King Valley, but the Eddie McDougall Wines Sangiovese 2016 was certainly up there for wines that I wanted to try. I am obsessed with Sangiovese – it was one of the first grapes that I fell in love with, and so this wine was right up my alley. I wanted to try it so badly that I couldn’t even wait for the weekend to open it over a special meal, so I upped my weeknight drinking game and gave it a crack!

Why I loved it

Eddie McDougall Wines Sangiovese 2016

This wine is perfect for those that love something a little more complex. The Eddie McDougall Wines Sangiovese 2016 is packed full of flavours that will keep you guessing. You’ll be wanting to have another sip just to try and unpack it. That, and it’s plain delicious!

On the nose, you’ll get sour cherries and a hint of vanilla. The Eddie McDougall Wines Sangiovese 2016 is quite fruit-forward with juicy flavours at the front, and a hint of cloves and vanilla to round it out. The tannins are velvety and plush, making the wine quite rich in flavour. This is rounded out by a crisp acidity at the end, making the wine very easy to drink. If cherries and spice are your jam, you are going to love this wine! It’s lively and juicy, but also rounded and velvety. It really delivers on everything you’d want from a Sangiovese and more!

What to pair it with

Sangiovese is made for food, and this wine is no different! Do like the Italians do and pair the Eddie McDougall Wines Sangiovese 2016 with a delicious meal. This wine would go perfectly with some pizza or tomato-based pasta. However, you could just as easily pair it with a nice BBQ – think steak and grilled vegetables! This wine really lends itself to these sorts of flavours, rather than something too rich or heavy. Save the heavier reds for those slow-cooked meats! You want to be able to enjoy the complexities of this wine while you enjoy your meal!

The final word on the Eddie McDougall Wines Sangiovese 2016

The Eddie McDougall Wines Sangiovese 2016 was simply delicious. It is a dark and mysterious wine that has so much to offer. Its complex flavours are plain delicious – with juiciness, velvety tannins and crisp acidity to finish. You’ll find you will finish the bottle all too quickly – but there’s nothing wrong with that! Pair it with your favourite pizza or pasta and sit back and enjoy!
