Wine review: Berrigan Wines 2021 Sangiovese

Recently I was sent a few wines from Berrigan Wines to try and I had to start with their Sangiovese. Sangiovese is definitely up there as one of my all-time favourite red wine varieties (you could say it was one of the ones that got me into wine). I haven’t had one from Adelaide Hills before so I was pretty excited to try the Berrigan Wines 2021 Sangiovese. And let me tell you, it’s a really good one! If you’re after a food-friendly wine that delivers complexity and flavour, this wine is for you. It has those classic Sangiovese characteristics that make it oh-so-delicious alongside a big bowl of pasta, pizza, or steak. Or all of the above!

On the nose, the Berrigan Wines 2021 Sangiovese has beautiful notes of raspberry, cherry and a hint of dried herbs and tomato. This follows through into the palate that has a lovely balance between fruit-driven notes of tart cherry and raspberry balanced by spice and those herbal notes, alongside a hint of chocolate. It’s the kind of wine that has so many delicious flavours to unpack sip after sip. It’s wonderfully bright yet soft at the same time, and complex yet beautifully balanced. Versatile, delicious and sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

About Berrigan Wines

Berrigan Wines focuses on sustainable growing and producing high quality, cool climate wines from Mount Benson and the Adelaide Hills. It is family owned and operated by Dan Berrigan and Wendi Ticao. They believe in producing wines that are harmonious, clean and fresh, with complexity and balance.

Their logo of the bull rider represents having the courage and taking the chance to have a crack. For Dan, this took the form of quitting his comfortable full-time role as chief winemaker at a winery to pursue his dream of running his own vineyard and winery. This led Dan and Wendi to purchase a vineyard in Adelaide Hills during the pandemic to pursue their dream. Starting from the management of their vineyards, right through to putting the wines to bottle, Dan and Wendi are hands-on in each and every step.

You can purchase this wine from Berrigan Wines website.
