The Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Syrah is a beautiful food wine offering complex yet balanced flavours. Juicy upfront with pepper and savoury notes to balance it out made for a wine I kept going back to. Perfect for enjoying over a good meal, this wine is sure to age beautifully.
Recently I was sent two wines from Soumah’s newest release and I couldn’t wait to try them! I have a long history of loving Soumah wines and so when this one turned up on my doorstep I couldn’t wait to try it!
The Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Syrah is not your typical Barossa Shiraz you might be used to. This one comes from the Yarra Valley and so is called a Syrah to distinguish it from those heavy-hitting juicy wines. This wine is more the French style of the Shiraz grape which are usually lighter bodied and peppery.
About Soumah
I’ve been a fan of Soumah Wines for quite some time and it is easy to see why with wines like this. We actually visited their winery with our bridal party the day before our wedding and had a very special lunch! Enjoying this wine took me back to that day.
Soumah has a great range of varieties they offer. They have the classics – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Viognier, but also focus on styles from Northern Italy such as Barbera, Brachetto, Nebbiolo and Pinot Grigio. This is what I love about their wines – you can try something you wouldn’t normally find in the Yarra Valley.
Soumah focuses on producing single-vineyard wines with quality over quantity as a core value. Their wines are elegant and made with a passion that truly shines through the end result.
What I loved about the Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Syrah 2020
I absolutely loved the Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Syrah. It was bolder than I was expecting but perfectly balanced. On the nose, it was really aromatic with floral notes along with cherry, blackberry and plum. This followed through into the palate which was juicy upfront and finished off with nice savoury notes of leather and tobacco along with spice. The use of new oak really added to this winemaking it was complex yet balanced with a great length.
This wine would be perfect as a gift or to bring along to a nice dinner party. It could also be aged for a few years to really allow the tannins to soften and the flavours to further develop. But it is also drinking deliciously now!
What to enjoy it with
The Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Syrah is crying out to be paired with a good meal. Slow-roasted meats or ragus would be the perfect pairing in my book. I could see myself enjoying this with a beef or lamb ragu and a big bowl of pasta.

The Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Syrah ticks all the boxes for me and continues my love affair with Soumah. Their wines seriously deliver in flavour and this one is no different. Juicy up front with savoury notes of tobacco and spice to balance it out make for a complex yet balanced wine. Perfect for sipping on over a meal.
