I’ve been meaning to post about this wine for a while and I’ve finally gotten around to it! I don’t often drink white wine, let alone review it. So I realised it was about time I made more of an effort to bring you more white wine! This one was an absolutely delicious wine that I got from my Vineful box (read my review of it here). With a focus on mindful wine, this service is a great way to try wines that are organic, biodynamic, vegan and natural.

Although I am not usually one to seek out Vegan wine, not being vegan and all, I definitely have tried a lot more wines with fewer preservatives and additives this year. These kinds of wines are definitely becoming more popular, and services like Vineful are making it even easier to find them!

Going vegan-friendly with the Dormilona Chenin Blanc 2018

So let’s talk about the Dormilona Chenin Blanc 2018. I haven’t had many Chenin Blanc wines before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Chenin Blanc has a lot of versatility and can even be oaked like a Chardonnay, so there’s something for everyone in this variety. It has medium to high acidity, making it a great dry style of wine for summer.

The wine comes from Dormilona in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. The wines are small batch and hand made with a focus on quality. Think naturally farmed fruit that is predominantly certified organic and biodynamic. The name itself means ‘lazy bones’ in Spanish. This is a nod to the winemaking with minimal intervention or additives.

Not only is the Dormilona Chenin Blanc 2018 vegan-friendly, but it is also 100% certified organic. The grapes were handpicked and popped whole into the barrel for wild ferment. So there’s really no hiding when it comes to this wine!

Why I love it

The first thing I loved about this wine, I’ll admit, was the label! It reminded me of a painting of a dream with beautiful blue colours that reminded me of summer. The label is so visual that I almost couldn’t find the name of the wine! It’s stamped onto it in a little corner with the focus staying on the imagery. If you are a sucker for a pretty label then this one will be right up your alley!

The best thing about the Dormilona Chenin Blanc 2018 is the flavour. I mean it’s great that it is organic and vegan-friendly, but if it doesn’t taste good are you really going to want to go back? Well, luckily this wine is scrumptious! It has quite a floral nose but completely different tastes. Flavour-wise I got an incredible hit of apples and a hint of lemon. This was followed by smooth, toasty flavours that really rounded out the palate. It’s creamy, it’s delicious and it’s balanced. Not too acidic, not too sweet, not too oaky!

So why will you love this wine? Well other than the pretty label and the feel goods from drinking Organic and vegan-friendly, this wine is heaven in a glass. It’s so well balanced, and the soft and creamy texture will make you want to go back for more!

What to enjoy it with

Dormilona Chenin Blanc 2018 - vegan-friendly deliciousness

Although the Dormilona Chenin Blanc 2018 is a vegan-friendly wine, I can’t say I enjoyed it in a vegan-friendly manner. You know what does go so well with this wine? Cheese. Seriously, a good cheese board with all the trimmings will have you set for a summer afternoon. Just sip on this wine and watch the world go by!

I wish I had vegan food pairings for you for dinner, but I also think this wine would go so well with chicken dishes. Much like a Chardonnay, the creamy taste would pair perfectly with a roast. Or, you could do something light like a salad or olive oil-based pasta (there we are, a vegan option for you!)

The final word on the Dormilona Chenin Blanc 2018

The Dormilona Chenin Blanc 2018 was an absolute treat to drink. I mean who doesn’t like toasty flavours, apples and creaminess? It’s like a match made in heaven, and with a hint of lemon, this wine was balanced perfectly. It was so delicious that we found we polished it off all too quickly. Then I had to debate if I had room to keep the beautiful bottle!

Whether you are into vegan-friendly wines, organic wines or not, I think you’ll still enjoy this wine. It has a great balance of flavours, is very pleasant to drink and goes perfectly with a pre-dinner cheese board. Who knows, with wines like these I might turn into a white drinker!
