Wine review: Elderton Wines Eden Valley Chardonnay

It’s no secret that we are big Chardonnay fans in our household. My husband and I are always on the hunt for a good Chardonnay. So when I was sent the Elderton Wines Eden Valley Chardonnay I was pretty excited to give it a go. I’m a big fan of Elderton Wines but it’s been a while since I’ve tried their Chardonnay, and this one ticked all the boxes for me. I love a balanced Chardonnay that gives you just the right amount of zippy acidity to balance out creamy notes from lees contact. And this wine is the perfect balance between the two. It delivers the best of both worlds!

On the nose, the Elderton Wines Eden Valley Chardonnay is packed full of notes of lemon and peach alongside a hint of nuttiness. These delightful aromas follow through into the palate which plays nicely between lemon, peach and toastiness from oak. It has a lovely creamy texture, but not so much so that it is overpowering. The lovely acidity comes through nicely and brings it all together. Each sip of this wine brings with it more complexity to unpack, but it’s all tied up into a beautifully balanced profile. It’s the kind of wine that makes you say “Yum” as you sip it, and I can’t think of anything better than that!

About Elderton Wines

Elderton Wines was started by Neil and Lorraine Ashmead who moved to the Barossa from Saudi Arabia in 1979. The homestead they moved to in Nuriootpa was surrounded by extremely old Shiraz and Cabernet vines that had become derelict at a time when demand for Australian table wine was minimal. The agent offered them 72 acres of vineyards as a bonus to purchasing the homestead, and three years later, after restoring the vineyard, Elderton Wines was born.

Elderton Wines is still proudly owned to this day by the Ashmead family and offers some of the best Barossa wines that the region has to offer. Their vision is to create excellence from distinguished vineyard sites. They have three vineyards that highlight the individual terroirs of the region through a wide range of variables. Their wines show balance and can be enjoyed young, but will still stand the test of time.
