Wine review: Sisu Chardonnay 2024

Meet the Sisu Chardonnay 2024, the debut release from Sisu in the Coal River Valley, Tasmania, and honestly, what a way to arrive. This is cool-climate Chardonnay done really well: generous and flavourful, but with enough freshness and restraint to keep you coming back for another glass. Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, and matured in a mix of new oak, seasoned oak, and stainless steel, it’s a wine that’s clearly been made with a lot of care. It’s also perfect for Chardonnay lovers who want the best of both worlds: rich yet refreshing.

The nose is peach, mandarin, and lemony brioche toast, with little hints of nuttiness and spice that make it feel a bit special. On the palate, it’s creamy and lush, but the cool-climate acidity keeps everything bright and lively, so it never feels too heavy. The finish is long and gently mineral. It’s drinking beautifully right now alongside something like grilled fish or roast chicken, but if you can bear to wait, it should only get better over the next three to five years. This is a really exciting first release, and I can’t wait to try the other wines and share them with you soon!

About Sisu Wines

Sisu is a young winery with a clear sense of purpose. Drawn to the Coal River Valley for its cool climate and nutrient-rich soils, vigneron Jake found a region that matched his vision for bright, expressive, finely structured wines. The vineyard covers 25 hectares within a much larger 95-hectare farm, and that extra space is intentional: this is a place where nature is very much part of the plan. Farming is holistic, intervention is minimal, and the focus is always on letting the fruit speak for itself.

What really sets Sisu apart, though, is its commitment to the land beyond the vineyard rows. A flock of 220 sheep roam the property, naturally mowing the grass, reducing tractor use, and feeding the soil with organic matter. The winery is certified sustainable, and as part of a broader rewilding mission, they’ve partnered with Landcare Tasmania to plant 1,300 native stems across the property, including prickly box, white gum, black wattle, and she-oaks. They also work with Land for Wildlife to better understand and support the species already calling the farm home. It’s a genuinely exciting approach to winemaking: good for the wines, and good for the ecosystem around them.
