Wine review: Tyrrell’s Single Vineyard HVD Semillon 2017

Recently I was sent three Semillon’s from Tyrrell’s to try and I could hardly contain my excitement. Each one is from a different single vineyard site, and all are from 2017. This year was one of the best years in recent memory for Semillon, producing world-class wines from the Hunter Valley which is renowned for this grape variety. Each wine showcases the distinct characteristics of the vineyard, and having tried the HVD from more recent vintages before, I decided to start with the Tyrrell’s Single Vineyard HVD Semillon 2017. Semillon is iconic for its ability to shift in its profile as it ages and can be aged for many years to develop richer flavours. So to try an older one was an absolute treat!

The Tyrrell’s Single Vineyard HVD Semillon 2017 shows just how long Semillon can be aged as it is really only just showing hints of the texture and complexity of aged Semillon. This made the wine still oh so refreshing with plenty of flavours still to unpack. On the nose, it is lifted with lovely aromas of lemon and a hint of floral. On the palate, the lemon follows through alongside green apple and a lovely minerality that makes this wine crisp and delicious. It has an almost chalky finish which hints at what’s to come. This wine is perfect if you’re looking to try something different in your white that is still crisp and refreshing.

About Tyrrell’s

Tyrell’s is a bit of an Aussie institution from the Hunter Valley, and it is easy to see why! Their rich history dates all the way back to 1858 when Edward Tyrell arrived in the Hunter Valley and planted Shiraz and Semillon.

160 plus years on, Tyrell’s has been a constant in both the Hunter Valley and Australian wine industries. From pioneering wine varieties to helping establish Hunter Valley Semillon as one of the world’s most iconic wines. Now they have deep respect for their foundations whilst looking to the future.
