With sustainable packaging, this vegan-friendly wine is helping us all make a difference with what we sip.

This week I wanted to share with you a white wine that’s sure to tick the boxes as the weather warms up. I’m not usually a big white wine drinker, but this one I have to say was delicious. Did I mention it is also under $20? If that doesn’t scream ready for your next picnic, I don’t know what does! It can be hard finding wines under $20 that bring it with the flavour. This wine doesn’t just taste great, it is also sustainably produced.

The folks at De Bortoli have released a new range of wines focused on sustainability because they believe that it is a ‘must-have’, not a ‘nice to have’. De Bortoli wants to encourage all Australians to do good and drink well, and so every purchase of this wine range helps contribute to collective efforts to help support the health and vitality of Australia’s bushland. You know how much I love getting behind a good cause particularly if it involves drinking wine. So let’s dive into this delicious Pinot Grigio that is set on making a difference.

De Bortoli 17 Trees Pinot Grigio – drink wine, do good

De Bortoli is on a quest to become a Zero Waste Wine Company through its operations and waste management. Their first sustainability project was in 2008 where they decided to plant 17 trees for each company vehicle to offset the carbon effects of its fleet. This first project is where the De Bortoli 17 Trees Pinot Grigio and the rest of the 17 Trees range got its name.

De Bortoli has partnered with not-for-profit organisation Trillion Trees to plant native trees for a sustainable future. Every 6 bottles of 17 Trees sold will go towards planting 1 tree in Australia, in the hope of rebuilding lost Australian bushland from the bushfires. If that’s not enough, 17 Trees is also packaged in lightweight recycled glass bottles, the labels are produced from natural fibre-based pulp and they use recycled packaging materials. They are so committed to sustainability, my information sheet on the wine even came on paper I can plant to grow my own native trees!

What I love about this project is that you can help make a difference with what you’re putting in your glass. De Bortoli has really made the effort to minimise their impact and help us contribute with what we’re drinking. Did I mention it’s also vegan? If you are socially and environmentally conscious with your purchases, this is a great way to enjoy good wine that ticks all the boxes.

Why I enjoyed it

De Bortoli 17 Trees Pinot Grigio

So let’s get down to what we, more importantly, need to know – how did the wine taste? Well, you’ll be glad to hear that coming from someone who doesn’t leap at the opportunity to grab a white wine, I really enjoyed this one. The De Bortoli 17 Trees Pinot Grigio is super refreshing, light and perfect for warmer weather. I really enjoyed how soft it was. It had just enough acidity to keep the palate lively, but it wasn’t overwhelming. I also loved the flavours in this wine. I got a hint of floral jasmine and citrus upfront with some great tropical fruit flavours as the wine developed. The wine really changes from the nose to the palate which I found interesting. It also had a crisp, clean finish which left me wanting another sip.

If you are in the market for an affordable white wine to enjoy as the weather gets warmer, definitely check this wine out. It’s perfect for those long picnics with friends, or as something to enjoy before dinner as an afternoon wind down. It’s the sort of wine you don’t need to think twice about the opening. It is tasty, fresh, and lively all at once. With its clean finish, I think it’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

What to pair it with

The De Bortoli 17 Trees Pinot Grigio can be enjoyed with or without food. Because it is so light and refreshing, I think this wine would be perfect for a drink before dinner, or as a wine to enjoy during the day.

If you are going to pair it with food, make sure you keep it light! I would keep it to fresh flavours like salads or seafood. Grilled chicken could also go great with this wine, or some nice grilled vegetables. Just keep it light and fresh to match this lively wine.

The final word on the De Bortoli 17 Trees Pinot Grigio
