I feel bad because this is my second Rosé review in a row, but I just can’t help myself, because this one was so damn tasty I simply had to review it! There’s also a bit of a story behind this one, and although I probably wouldn’t have cracked it open myself on a Sunday afternoon at home (I am a bit of a wine hoarder, it’s true), I am so glad my partner did because I got to taste this glorious drop. And when you have such a good tasting wine, why not shout it from the rooftops? Or the blog…I didn’t actually shout it from the rooftop.

The Good Food and Wine Show

So a few years ago, I think it was 2015, we went to the Good Food and Wine Show, which I know I’ve spoken about before, last week in fact. I guess this is because I always end up a. trying a lot of wine there, b. buying a lot of wine there once I’m tipsy and c. drinking the wine from there because I can’t wait to cellar it.

This wine is from the Good Food and Wine show we first went to, and so for once it has actually been aged. This I put down to my partner leaving it at his parent’s house in a book-case where there was a nice little stash of wine we both forgot about until he went to clear out his old room a few months ago. Honestly, what a bonus! There are some wines there that we probably would have drunk in a second but didn’t because we forgot about them! Talk about forced aging.

What a happy accidental aging

This was the first time I discovered Taltarni wine, and I have bought from them since because they produce great wines down in Victoria. As well as Rosé, they have a number of delicious sparkling wines, and some great reds too! I still have managed to keep my paws off the sparkling I bought from them, but I keep thinking about it when I open my wine fridge, and something tells me it isn’t going to last long in there!

I’ve actually just look on their website and realised that this wine is no longer available, even in a later year, so now I’m feeling a bit sad that we drunk it, because their wines are so beautiful! But they do have a pinot noir Rosé that I’m sure would be just as fantastic! Honestly if you are after an Australian wine that’s a bit different, I would look up this winery. We always visit their stall at the Good Food and Wine show, and they almost got me to sign up to the wine club, which is no small feat! It is a good wine club, by the way!

Why I loved it

So we tried the Taltarni 2014 Merlot Rosé towards the end of the day when everyone was starting to get out their wallets. My partner’s cousin decided that John had enjoyed the Rosé so much that he wanted to buy it for him. My partner doesn’t remember this, nor does he remember his feelings about it at the time, but regardless, we ended up with this bottle and haven’t gotten around to drinking it. I guess we also bought it on the cusp of Rosé having a comeback, so when we weren’t huge Rosé drinkers. Fast forward to 2018 when it is one of our favourite wines to drink on a hot summer afternoon, and it definitely came tumbling out of our wine fridge when my partner felt like a wine on Sunday.

What I couldn’t believe was the colour of this Rosé. It is very salmon and more orange in its colour than other Rosé I’ve had. I think this is because we haven’t drunk it and it has ended up aging. This is not usually what you do with Rosé which you can typically get away with drinking quite young. I was a bit skeptical about what it was going to taste like, but it was absolutely delicious! Even though it was quite dry in its flavour and not that sweet, it tasted zingy from a citrus taste.

Final verdict

I loved how it was still super refreshing despite not being sweet, as the flavours were so subtle. It was also quite robust for a Rosé I think because of the age. It was actually perfect, and a brand new experience for us. The Rosé we typically drink is quite light.

Even though you can’t get this wine anymore, I would highly recommend trying their Pinot Noir Rosé, or any of the other Taltarni wines. I keep going back to this producer because their wines are just delicious! I think this has also taught me that aging a good Rosé produces a completely different experience. If I can wait again, I might try this with other wines!
