This week I am reviewing another Rosé because the people asked for it. I posted a picture on instagram when I was enjoying this wine, and asked if people wanted a review. There was a resounding yes, so what else could I do but review it for you all? I promise the next review will be of another variety. We can’t have this becoming a Rosé all day blog after all.
As you’ve probably realised now, I am a bit of a Rosé fan, and so are my friends. This is normally our go to drink for a sneaky vino with lunch, or even something before dinner. As it starts to get hotter I know my tendency towards this refreshing type of wine will increase.
We decided to have a friend over who I haven’t seen for a while, and she brought over a bottle of Rosé for the occasion. She was a bit hesitant about it because she’d tried another a few weeks ago and it was average (she didn’t tell me what brand it was so I can’t disclose). But she was gallant enough to get back on the Rosé horse and try another from her collection with me. And we were in for a treat.
Rosé so good it is already sold out
The Rosé I am reviewing this week is the Wiley Rooster Hunter Rosé 2018. You can get it from Naked Wines, or at least you could, because this wine was snapped up so fast I didn’t even get a chance to buy more. I’ve had a look around and can’t seem to find it anywhere else, so hopefully they get some more stock given the success!
Normally I would be a bit hesitant of drinking a wine without much age on it, but this wine proved me wrong. It shows that age isn’t always the most important factor, especially when you’re drinking Rosé. The flavours are just as good on a young wine as an older wine, and this one is living proof. Well was, my friends and I have drunk it now, and if Naked Wines doesn’t get more in I may not get to try it again!
Why I loved it
This wine is made from the Merlot grapes which doesn’t mean a lot to me when it comes to Rosé. I still haven’t worked out which grapes I like when it comes to this variety. Normally I am not a huge fan of Merlot as a red, but as a Rosé I really enjoyed it.
What I like so much about this wine is that it has a really good balance. It can be hard to balance the right sweetness and dryness in Rosé, and you’ll usually find one stands out. Myself, I prefer something with a bit of dryness to it, and I found this Rosé had the perfect amount. Whilst it had a light, almost fruity flavour to it, it wasn’t sweet because of the balance of dryness in the wine. It made it quite enjoyable and all too easy to drink!
To be honest, I’ve read this wine has turkish delight characteristics. I’m not one for tasting notes at the best of times, but I definitely didn’t get this. Morale of the story, don’t be too put off by the tasting notes. They might put you off a cracking wine!
What to enjoy it with
Personally I think this wine doesn’t need any food. It is a great drop on its own, and I think the food might overpowering the nice flavours in the wine. You could also enjoy this with a lunch or at the start of a summer meal. I’ll just say it definitely didn’t go with my Italian takeout (that was a job for a red), but you could definitely pair this with a salad or something nice and light.
My perfect pairing however would be a nice summer sunset and some cheese. This is my ideal Rosé enjoying activity. Unfortunately when I was drinking this bottle it was pouring outside, but it made me forget about that for a moment.
The final verdict
If this wine comes back in stock online, I would definitely grab yourself some bottles. For how good it tastes, it is a great price. Don’t be fooled by how cheap it is, this wine stands its ground with Rosé that is triple its price. It is the right balance of flavours and honestly just an enjoyable wine. It is definitely something I would love to have a couple of bottles of for those balmy summer evenings.
