The Vino Intrepido ‘Grey Matter’ Ramato Pinot Grigio 2021 is a fantastic Summer food wine with vibrant flavours and crunchy texture. I know what you’re thinking – this looks like another Rosé all day moment from the Cheeky Vino. Groundbreaking Ella. Well, as much as normally you would be right, in this case, you are wrong! For this is actually a white wine, technically! And we need to talk about it because this white wine knocked my socks off.
I’m a big fan of the wines from Vino Intrepido. James makes some really delicious drops, and I haven’t met one I haven’t liked (in fact his Sangiovese was rated my favourite red wine of 2020). So when I received a few of his latest vintage to sample I was so excited. Unfortunately, the postman had other plans and my wine didn’t get to me. James didn’t give up though, and after a couple of months of trying to get these wines to me, I finally have them in my hot little hands.
There were so many wines I wanted to try it was hard to know where to begin. But this Pinot Grigio really caught my eye because of its colour. I am predictable, I know. But it was so delicious I had to share it with you all!
About Vino Intrepido
James Scarcebrook started Vino Intrepido in 2016 because he was a wine lover who wanted to see what it was like to make wine. The project was for his interest, and he focused on making wines from Italian varieties using grapes from regions around Australia. His love of wine shines through the finished product of his range of delicious and unique wines.
James is passionate about furthering the understanding and appreciation of both Italian wines and Italian grape varieties in Australia. He selects varieties that suit the Australian climate and soil, and also focuses on the region. His focus is on using his experience to make approachable and surprising wines.
What I loved about the Vino Intrepido ‘Grey Matter’ Ramato Pinot Grigio
The Vino Intrepido ‘Grey Matter’ Ramato Pinot Grigio 2021 is made in a style traditional to the Friuli region in Italy. The name comes from the word Rame which means copper as a nod to the use of skin contact in this wine. The wines of Italy can be anything from a blush colour to a light red, but James made it more towards the white wine style.
The reason for the name Grey Matter is because what was such an uncomplicated wine took brain activity, and the colour reminded James’ of brains. Well, I don’t know about you but it doesn’t quite remind me of that. More salmon maybe? Each to their own. Regardless this description made me laugh!
This wine is seriously refreshing and vibrant. It is quite aromatic with apples and blossoms on the nose. These follow through into the palate which is fruit-forward yet crunchy with the perfect amount of acidity. It is full of flavour and absolutely delicious. I found myself going back sip after sip to keep unpacking this wine. It is just plain tasty.
What to enjoy it with
The Vino Intrepido ‘Grey Matter’ Ramato Pinot Grigio 2021 is a great food wine as it has a really nice crunchy texture added to the wine that gives it just that little bit more than a typical Pinot Grigio. Ramato style wines are known for being very food-friendly and this wine is no different.
Personally, I think this wine would be perfect when paired with Summer meals. White meats, seafood or even a charcuterie board would make great pairings. But I think this wine would also be a good match to Asian cuisine as a refreshing pairing.
