I’ve been drinking a few too many red wines lately so I decided that I needed to shake up my reviews with a Rosé that I enjoyed a while back. I’ve got a few great bottles of Rosé squirrelled away but I seem to be hoarding them for a future special occasion, so I figured I should instead review one that I felt no issue in drinking: the Take it to the grave Rosé.

I don’t know about you, but I find it quite hard to choose wine at chain bottle stores, particularly Rosé. I find the varieties can be hard to pick, and I’m hesitant to try them as I’m really not sure if they’ll be any good. This is why I often end up spending a little more to have a Provence Rosé, because I know I love them! But on this particular occasion, I branched out because my partner was doing the buying, and I’m glad he did. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have found this gem of a wine!

Take it to the grave Rosé

I hear you asking, how could a great Rosé be under $20? Rosé does have a bit of a reputation issue where cheaper mass-produced bottles really messed up what the market thought of it for many years. Only now is it making a comeback, and even then most people still feel hesitant buying one under $20. There’s a general fear that it will be sickly sweet and undrinkable.

However, with the rise of popularity in Rosé, more and more producers are coming out with decently priced bottles that are absolutely delicious. Rosé as a drink is meant for drinking now, so it makes sense that decent wines aren’t always over $20. The Take it to the grave Rosé 2018 is one of these wines!

Is it the best Rosé I’ve had in my life? No. But did I enjoy drinking it on a sunny summer afternoon by the beach? You better believe it. Rosé isn’t meant to always be a fancy experience, in fact, it originated from being the French pre-dinner drinking wine. Easy, affordable and simple. Now we are lucky enough that we can access these wines in Australia that are great for the everyday! No guilt here in popping one of these bottles open for no good reason.

Why I love it

The Take it to the grave Rosé 2018 is a really nice light style Rosé. It is quite pale in colour with a hint of salmon, which to be honest is my Rosé jam. Making up the Take it to the grave Rosé is a mixture of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro from the Barossa Valley, which made me think the wine was going to be quite overpowering with big, bold flavours. I personally am not the biggest fan of Rosé that is too overwhelming, so I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

When you smell the wine, you get a great array of flavours from light floral and fruity characteristics. Think strawberries, roses and a bit of vanilla. Sounds delicious to me! The taste has these notes too, but a nice whack of acidity balances these sweet flavours out and makes the wine quite dry. It gives the wine a long finish that really lingers, which I think is good as the flavours are quite delicate.

Overall, this wine was great drinking wine. It went down all too easy and on a summer afternoon, the bottle was finished far too quickly. Luckily it is so affordable because you don’t have to feel the least bit guilty about that!

What to pair it with

This wine I think goes best without food. I enjoyed sipping on this before dinner on a Saturday afternoon. I can 100% recommend this approach, especially if you’re at the beach! You could also pair it with some cheese, but nothing too strong.

If you are wanting to pair this wine with food, I would keep it on the light side. Think grilled chicken or pork with a light salad, or Vietnamese food. The great thing about Rosé is that it goes with many different types of food. All you need is a drinkable bottle like Take it to the grave Rosé and you are good to go!

The final word on Take it to the grave Rosé

The Take it to the grave Rosé 2018 is perfectly drinkable with a great price to match. This wine is so easy drinking that you’ll find the bottle will magically disappear before your eyes in an instant. Particularly when paired with a nice summer afternoon spent by the sea.

It can be hard to pick Australian Rosé at this price point with confidence, but it’s wines like the Take it to the grave Rosé that show great drinking Rosé can come at an affordable price. And sometimes you find yourself at a bottle store needing some wine, and you need the confidence to grab a bottle. The Take it to the grave Rosé has your back! Fruity but dry with a long finish, this wine is sure to be a crowd pleaser that delivers tasty wine at a great price.
