The Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Brachetto Tranquillo is a refreshing dessert wine that doesn’t overwhelm the palate. Enjoy with fresh berries, soft cheese or even just on its own as a way to finish off a balmy summer evening.
This week I wanted to share a wine that surprised me. You see I’m not a massive fan of sweet wines usually. Don’t get me wrong, we often end up purchasing them on winery tours because why not right? My partner’s sweet tooth also has a bit to do with this! But we rarely end up drinking them, and as a result, have a few sitting around! But when I was sent this wine as a gift for the holidays from Soumah, I was really intrigued. And once I tried the Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Brachetto Tranquillo it might have just made me change my mind about sweet wines!
This wine was made using the Brachetto grape which is something I have never tried. Brachetto is an ancient Italian variety dating back to Roman times and is only planted in a few vineyards in Australia, Soumah being one of the few! They made this wine using the ‘Tranquillo’ method to showcase this grape at its best. This method is used in Italy to produce Prosecco with no bubbles! Talk about learning while you are sipping – this wine seriously surprised me, and I think it will surprise you too!
About Soumah
Soumah of the Yarra Valley is a winery we visited late last year on our trip to the Yarra Valley. Their cellar door is beautiful, has a great restaurant, and their range of wines has something for everyone and every price point. I honestly can say I am a big fan of everything I’ve tried from them, and I keep finding more that I love.
Soumah of the Yarra Valley has a great range of varieties they offer. They have the classics – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Viognier, but also focus on styles from Northern Italy such as Barbera, Brachetto, Nebbiolo and Pinot Grigio. This is what I love about their wines – you can try something you wouldn’t normally find in the Yarra Valley.
Soumah of the Yarra Valley focuses on producing single-vineyard wines with quality over quantity as a core value. Their wines are elegant and made with a passion that truly shines through the end result.
Why I enjoyed the Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Brachetto Tranquillo
The Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Brachetto Tranquillo was made by utilising the natural fruit sugars in the wine, and stopping fermentation before the wine becomes completely dry. What is left is a still dessert wine with lower alcohol content and fresh and clean palate. Sound good to you? Well, it certainly did to me!
Get those thoughts out of your head of an oversweet Dessert Wine, this wine is none of those things. It is sweet, but this is balanced out by a very nice refreshing palate with clean flavours of rose water and strawberries. I loved that this wine didn’t overwhelm you with sugar, and wasn’t syrupy at all. Instead, what was left was a wine that was easy drinking, refreshing and balanced. A hint of citrus at the end of the palate really ties it all together.
What I loved about this wine was that it was a great way to end the night. Because it is lighter on the alcohol, if you have overindulged over dinner it offers a nice clean wine to top off the evening with.
What to pair it with
The Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Brachetto Tranquillo is a dessert wine so it is no surprise that it goes perfectly with dessert. However, it could just as easily satisfy a bit of a sweet tooth without anything too!
What do I recommend? I think fresh flavours of berries would go perfectly with this wine or even some sort of pastry. Fresh fruit and a bit of ice cream would be a dream come true. If you aren’t in the mood for sweet, this wine would also go really well with a cheese platter and some nice gooey cheese!
In summary: Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Brachetto Tranquillo
The Soumah 2020 Single Vineyard Brachetto Tranquillo really surprised me and made me rethink what dessert wine needs to be. It has some sweetness, but this is balanced by a clean palate and nice refreshing notes of citrus. The wine is the perfect way to cap off a night and cool down during the warmer months. Serve with dessert or without, it doesn’t matter! I for one loved this refreshing end to our evening when we enjoyed it over the Christmas break!
