This week I brought along a nice wine to a friend’s place for a girls night. We were all pretty exhausted, but not exhausted enough to have some takeout and watch a movie with face masks. The only thing missing was the wine to make it a perfect relaxing evening, and so I brought along a bottle I’d had sitting in the fridge waiting for a special occasion. I also wanted to get it out of my fridge as it meant one less thing to move, so it was a good excuse!
An ode to Rosé
Rosés have made a comeback in the past year or so, and have become really popular. I myself have been ordering Rosé instead of white wine when I’m having a drink with lunch or a light meal, as I do tend to prefer it to white wine. I think this is just my personal preference towards red, although I am finding some good whites I’ve been enjoying recently. The main problem I have is it is really hard to know whether it’s going to be a good Rosé or not. Unlike with reds where I know the varieties I enjoy, Rosé feels like uncharted territory for me, where I’m often picking a wine and hoping I will like it. I guess I’ll have to keep drinking Rosé to expand my knowledge base!
I find that Rosés can either be like a moscato and quite sweet, which I don’t like, or they can be dry and more complex. Often it is quite hard for me to know what I’m getting just by reading the description, I don’t know if that is just me though! I’ve also tried looking at the colour of the Rosé; if it is a bright pink I tend to stay away, but if it has a more subtle colour I usually enjoy it. I tend to like Rosé that is quite subtle in its flavour, a little dry, but as far from sweet as possible. I guess that comes from being a red wine drinker.
A Rosé bottle shop find
So I found the Squealing Pig Pinot Noir Rosé in a bottle shop one weekend, and I basically picked it because I thought the colour seemed good, and I recognised the brand. Sometimes this is all the thought process that goes in to my bottle shop visits, I have to tell you (sometimes I even pick based on how pretty the label is…seriously, no science here). I didn’t end up getting around to drinking it as I guess there was no moment for Rosé in the weekend. Lucky for me it meant I had it stored away in the fridge just waiting for another occasion.
Why I loved it
This wine is absolutely delicious. It isn’t too dry, but it has really complex flavours after you’ve taken a sip. It doesn’t really linger on your tongue for long though, so I found it quite easy to drink. A little too easy actually, it went down so well, and I found I had a couple of glasses and didn’t get sick of the same flavour. It was absolutely delicious, and went perfectly with the thai food we ordered in to have with our Netflix. I liked how light this wine was without being too sickly sweet. It was the perfect combination, and one of the better Rosés I’ve had lately.
What to enjoy it with
This wine would be perfect with a light meal like thai or a salad, but I think the best place to enjoy it would be just on it’s own, having a drink with friends. You could also pair it nicely with some hard cheese such as a cheddar I reckon, but that could just be me really liking cheese. I feel like every time I sip on wine with friends I want to have some cheese along with it.
