You’ll enjoy it if: You don’t like your sparkling too punchy
I’ve been working my way through my wines from VinoMofo a little bit too slowly. I don’t know why this is, but I am putting it down to the fact that they’ve all been so delicious that I want to make them last! I got a mixed dozen of Whites, Rosé and Sparkling and each wine has been absolutely delicious. It makes me sad when I realise I’ve only got a few left! But I need to remind myself that the wine is there to be drunk and enjoyed so enjoy it I shall! This week I enjoyed the Night Flower Cuvée NV Sparkling.
Over the weekend we had dinner with friends and went to someone’s place beforehand to have a couple of drinks before dinner. What started as a couple of drinks became quite the boozy night because a few of us at the table loved the wines on offer so much, but that’s a story for another time. We’re here to talk about before all that happened when I was after a nice refreshing sparkling to enjoy before dinner.
When it comes to Sparkling Wine, I think you may have realised now that I am not picky. I’ll drink pretty much anything because I find there aren’t many I don’t enjoy. With such a vast array of flavours created by different grapes, methods and regions, I love exploring all the different tastes. But my partner is not the same and can be quite picky about his Sparkling Wine. He won’t drink it all that often, but when he does it has to be good for him to keep going back.
Well, this week I am reviewing a wine that has his seal of approval, so you know it has to be good.
Just what you need on a Summer afternoon
The wine I am reviewing this week is the Night Flower Cuvée NV Sparkling. I would call this a Sparkling Rosé because of the colour, but it is a really subtle pink. I am a sucker for a salmon coloured wine and this definitely ticked the box. It is made up of a mixture of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier & Moscato. Now, having a Sparkling Moscato isn’t usually my cup of tea, but don’t be fooled. This wine is far from sweet!
This wine is from Tasmania which I’ve really been enjoying the wines from lately, and it’s making me want to go very desperately! There are so many interesting wines coming from this region, and this one definitely fits the bill!
I grabbed the bottle because it is one of the only ones from the dozen wines that I got from VinoMofo that I still had two of. I felt it was a safe bet because of this as if I loved it I still had another in the fridge. Well, thank goodness for that because this wine was awesome! We polished off the bottle all too easily before dinner, which now I look back was probably the beginning of the end. Or the beginning of a great night in wine!
Why I love it
The reason I loved this wine was how easy it was to drink. I know that makes me sound like an alcoholic, but I promise it’s for another reason. Making an easy drinking wine seems hard, particularly Sparkling because it does take careful winemaking to promote delicate flavours and create something that doesn’t hit you hard with punchy flavours.
This wine is fresh and delicate. Although it was slightly sweet to start with, it was subtle. Following this was a hint of dryness that rounded off the palate and didn’t linger for long. It had enough citrus to make the wine refreshing, but not so much that it overpowered everything. This made it all too easy to keep drinking it without feeling overpowered by certain flavours.
I feel like sometimes you want those sparkling wines with a hint of acidity and strong flavours. I definitely don’t doubt that! But this wine was a refreshing change from those bold flavours, and a great sparkling rose. I find sometimes Sparkling Rosé is sometimes a little too sweet and the Night Flower Cuvée NV Sparkling was far from this stereotype!
What to enjoy it with
We really enjoyed this wine with some cheese and olives. It was a great contrast to salty flavours in the antipasti platter. However, I found I enjoyed it most when I sipped on it without food. Something about watching the sunset and having a laugh with friends really added to the wine.
Otherwise, a light chicken or fish dish would be a perfect accompaniment to this wine. Personally, I prefer to have sparkling wine before dinner, but I know that isn’t everyone!
What I’m getting at is that this wine is something you can enjoy with or without food, depending on your preference.
The final word
[click_to_tweet tweet=”The Night Flower Cuvée NV Sparkling is a delicious, fresh and delicate wine. Normally Sparkling Rosé is too sweet for me, but this knocked it out of the park.It did for my partner too. Normally he wouldn’t keep going back for more with Sparkling Wine, but between the two of us, it was a bit of a race to the finish of the bottle.
I am so glad that we have another bottle on hand so I, I mean we, can enjoy it again! I’ll just have to pick another afternoon to sip on it while watching the sunset. It doesn’t get better than that right?
