Wine review: Mumm Central Otago Blanc de Noirs

I can’t say I’ve had many Blanc de Noirs, and I certainly haven’t had any from Central Otago. So when I was sent the Mumm Blanc de Noirs Central Otago to try I was pretty excited to give it a go. We are visiting Central Otago over Christmas and New Year’s, so it was even better to sip on this wine and get excited for our trip. You may know Mumm for their Champagne, but they also produce some sparkling wines in other wine regions around the world. The Mumm Central Otago Blanc de Noirs is one of them, and if you want to try something different in your sparkling wine whilst still getting those great Champagne flavours, this wine is definitely one for you. It’s a lovely dry style with a rounded mouth-feel and medium body, and just enough oomph to make it great for celebrations with or without food.

On the nose, the Mumm Central Otago Blanc de Noirs has those classic traditional method notes of brioche along with a hint of citrus and apricot. This follows through into the palate that has a nice weight and a lovely balance between zippy freshness and rounded notes from time on lees. It’s got just the right amount of creamy texture to give the wine exactly what you’d want to find, and enough acidity to make it refreshing. I love the strength that comes from the Pinot grapes, giving it a bit more structure to wrap your head around. Pair with celebrations over the holiday season and you have a crowd-pleasing combo! This wine really shines a light on the wonderful sparkling that Central Otago fruit can produce.
