After receiving the mixed dozen from Mount Avoca wines, I’ve really been enjoying trying their Estate range. The pack came with a bit of everything so we’ve been enjoying the range over the last few weeks and loving every bottle. But when we tried the Mount Avoca Estate 2019 Old Vine Shiraz I decided I needed to tell everyone about it, and so here we are!
I love a good Shiraz, and I was a bit hesitant to open this one because it seemed like one to squirrel away and hoard. But my partner chose the wine one Friday night and I should have known his eyes would go straight to this one! I was secretly glad to have an excuse to open it! And now we’ve enjoyed it I’m wishing I had another bottle or two to enjoy.

That is such an amazing discount and something you don’t often see! The wines we’ve had so far have really shown me that this is great value, so definitely worth considering if you’re after tasty wine at a good price.
What I loved about the Mount Avoca Estate 2019 Old Vine Shiraz
The Mount Avoca Estate 2019 Old Vine Shiraz is a seriously good Shiraz. Old vines mean more intensity in flavours as there is less yield from the vines, and this really shines through in this wine. The deep colour of the wine in the glass hints at the intensity with ruby red hues. On the nose, I got aromas of cherry, mocha and a hint of pepper spice.
On the palate, I really loved the structure of this wine. It’s full-bodied with flavours of blueberry, cherry and pepper. I also got a hint of figs. There was a good hit of tannins to balance out the fruit and a really lovely long finish. This wine really stuck around long after you’d taken a sip, which made it really indulgent and delicious.
This is the sort of Shiraz that offers something rich and complex but also balanced. I think it would make for a great gift, or something to enjoy over a special meal. You could also pop it away for a couple of years to continue ageing. I think this would really help the flavours to continue to develop.
What to enjoy it with
The Mount Avoca Estate 2019 Old Vine Shiraz is a perfect food wine and would be best enjoyed with a good meal. But what would be the perfect pairing? Well, we enjoyed this with steak, but I think it would really stand up to a roasted meat dish. Think slow-roasted lamb or a nice stew or casserole. Even roast beef would be a great combination. The richness of the wine would go so perfectly with these sorts of dishes.
