Wine review: Levantine Hill 2017 Sparkling Rosé

It’s not often I enjoy a really special sparkling wine, and it’s wines like the Levantine Hill 2017 Sparkling Rosé that make me wonder why. Unfortunately, my husband isn’t the biggest fan of premium sparkling (being partial to an Aperol spritz and nothing else with bubbles), so I often find opening a bottle is a bit lost on him. I certainly don’t want to share it if he’s not going to appreciate it! But I had the perfect excuse of enjoying this bottle so I could share my thoughts, so lucky me I got to indulge. And I am so glad I did!

This Yarra Valley sparkling is perfect for special occasions and would also be a great gift. It is at a higher price point but the reason for this is the thought and care that’s gone into the bottle. After balancing the Pinot Noir from three targeted sites across their vineyards, Levantine Hill’s winemakers left this wine to age for six years on lees before disgorging to enhance the richness and weight of this wine. So each sip is truly a magical experience.

Flavour profile

The Levantine Hill 2017 Sparkling Rosé is truly a taste sensation. It is one of those truly special wines you’ll remember sipping long after you finish the bottle. It has lovely aromas of peach, and strawberry and a hint of spice. The tasting notes suggested Campari and I get a hint of that too! The palate is where the magic happens though. Flavours of orange, strawberry and spice come together into a beautiful taste sensation. The palate is rich, complex and intense with plenty to unpack in each sip. The palate is weighted yet has just the right amount of acidity to round it out. It’s the sort of wine that creates an experience as you drink it. I’m just glad I didn’t even have to share it with anyone!

About Levantine Hill

Nestled in the heart of Australia’s Yarra Valley, Levantine Hill Winery is an absolute treasure trove for lovers of premium Australian wine. Since their first vintage in 2012, they’ve continued to make an impression and are considered some of the best wines in the Yarra Valley. Levantine Hill was established by the Jreissati family who bought a well-established vineyard on the Maroondah Highway at Coldstream and began creating a new one. Their wines are handcrafted without compromise, producing premium bottles with exceptional quality.

The winery began against the odds, with experts saying the terrain was incapable of sustaining vines in such an elevated location. But they persevered with a vision to produce exceptional wines, and now their vineyards have an elevation that is quite similar to the Grand Cru vineyards of Chablis, France. This spirit of determination shines through in their quality award-winning wines.

Levantine Hill Winery is known for its unwavering commitment to creating top-notch wines that are nothing short of a sheer delight. Heading the winemaking team is the incredible Paul Bridgeman, a winemaker extraordinaire with over two decades of experience. Paul’s infectious enthusiasm and passion permeate every bottle, from tenderly tending to the vineyards to producing wines that are an ode to the Yarra Valley’s terroir. Levantine Hill boasts a series of meticulously tended vineyard sites that lay the foundation for their winemaking excellence. These vineyards are strategically positioned to capture the essence of the Yarra Valley’s diverse microclimates, ensuring that each wine embodies the unique character of its origin.
