Wine review: Berrigan Wines 2022 Syrah Nouveau
I’ve really been enjoying trying a few of the wines from Berrigan Wines for the past few weeks, and the Berrigan Wines 2022 Syrah Nouveau. Despite the weather cooling down, you’d be surprised by how often the opportunity still comes up to enjoy chilled red in Brisbane. It’s something that isn’t really common to find, especially at an affordable price point. So when I saw this wine has a recommendation to be served chilled, I was really excited to give it a go. There is something about chilled red that really hits the spot at the right moment, where white is too light for the meal, and you don’t want something really heavy. This wine is perfect for those moments, and with a lower alcohol content, it’s perfect for those looking for lighter alternatives.
On the nose, the Berrigan Wines 2022 Syrah Nouveau is nicely aromatic with notes of plum, blackberry and cherry. These fruit flavours follow through into the medium-bodied palate that also has a nice hint of vanilla. The mouthfeel is soft and plush which balances out those juicy fruit notes nicely. It’s got just the right amount of oompf in tannin and acidity to make it great for pairing with food. This wine would be right at home with a nice big bowl of pasta or a pizza. It honestly couldn’t get much better than that!
About Berrigan Wines
Berrigan Wines focuses on sustainable growing and producing high quality, cool climate wines from Mount Benson and the Adelaide Hills. It is family owned and operated by Dan Berrigan and Wendi Ticao. They believe in producing wines that are harmonious, clean and fresh, with complexity and balance.
Their logo of the bull rider represents having the courage and taking the chance to have a crack. For Dan, this took the form of quitting his comfortable full-time role as chief winemaker at a winery to pursue his dream of running his own vineyard and winery. This led Dan and Wendi to purchase a vineyard in Adelaide Hills during the pandemic to pursue their dream. Starting from the management of their vineyards, right through to putting the wines to bottle, Dan and Wendi are hands-on in each and every step.
