- You’ll enjoy it if: You don’t like your rosé too acidic or sweet
This week I wanted to review a rosé that I’ve enjoyed on many occasions. It is one that we frequently drink, especially when we are with my partner’s family. They were actually the ones who introduced me to it, and now that they have it has been one of my favourites for quite some time.
The second best part about this wine, as the first is obviously how good the wine itself tastes, is the bottle. Unlike most bottles of wine that come in a standard wine bottle, this one is a little special. It comes in a glass bottle with a glass stopper, so after you’ve drunk your wine you can reuse it as a bottle for water or anything else! How good is that?
Now on to the wine
This wine is the Gerard Bertrand Côte des Roses Rosé. You’ll know this wine when you see it from its iconic bottle with the rose shaped bottom. It is easy to pick out in the rosé aisle at the bottle shop because it stands out in its shape. The label is quite small and unassuming because the bottle speaks for itself. What’s inside this great bottle is a beautiful rosé that will keep you coming back for more.
I don’t usually buy this bottle of rosé myself, but for some reason I had a bottle in our wine fridge for a while waiting for the perfect time to open it. I usually only buy rosé on a whim and not having it on hand, and this usually means I pay a premium for it from our local boutique bottle shops. But this rosé is mostly available in chain bottle shops (I’ve actually never seen it anywhere else) and so I normally don’t end up buying it. Luckily I had the foresight that I might want a bottle to enjoy later! I think I need to do this more often.
Why I love it
What I first love about this wine is the colour. It is a perfect blush colour and not something vibrant and pink, like some rosé is. The colour reminds me of the rosé that we had while we were in Provence and Nice, which were always a lovely pink-salmon colour. This wine is actually from the region to the East of where we were, but it still reminds me of those summer afternoons in France, sipping on a rosé and people watching.
The taste of this rosé is also excellent. What I like about it is it is really well-balanced. It isn’t very sweet at all, but it also isn’t acidic, which I find some rosé is and this can make them difficult to drink. This wine is incredibly subtle in its flavour, and although the taste doesn’t linger, it is really refreshing. I think it is sometimes hard to find a rosé that is subtle and doesn’t pack a punch. This wine reminds me more of the French rosé we were drinking over there because they are made for enjoying on a hot day and not with a heavy meal.
What to enjoy it with
This wine is great on its own and perfect for consuming on a summer or spring afternoon. You truly don’t need anything with this wine to enjoy it because it is so refreshing and subtle. I love nothing more than to have a glass of this of an afternoon whilst watching the sunset on the beach.
If you are going to pair it with food, I would recommend some cheese and cured meats, but nothing too rich. It would also go nicely with a salad or something light for a nice summer dinner.
Final verdict
The Gerard Bertrand Côte des Roses Rosé is one of the best rosés that I’ve had in Australia. I know this is a big call, and I’m happy to be proven wrong with other wines, but for now this one is perfect to my tastes. It takes me back to an incredible trip in France, and each time I take a sip I feel like I’m back on the French Riviera. Even if you haven’t been to France, this wine will remind you of summer and balmy afternoons.
This rosé is great if you like subtle wines with the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. It’s a great option if you want something to enjoy before dinner, and the best part is you can reuse the amazing, beautiful bottle! A wine that keeps giving long after you’ve finished the bottle.
