Have you tried Sagrantino before? It’s an Italian variety mostly found in one small village in Umbria which is near Tuscany called Montefalco. It is one of the rare red grapes that has colour in both the skin and pulp, making intensely dark and tannic wines. Historically used for sweet wines, it is now more commonly used for dry table wines and blends.
But James from Vino Intrepido has brought it to us here in Australia with the Vino Intrepido Sagrantino 2020 by using grapes from Heathcote in Victoria. I was so excited to try my first ever wine of this variety. I’ve been a big fan of Vino Intrepido wines for quite a while now, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed, but to be honest I never am with his wines!

What I loved about the Vino Intrepido Sagrantino 2020
The Vino Intrepido Sagrantino 2020 is aromatic, lively and fresh with a beautiful texture and crunchy acidic finish. I loved how aromatic this wine was – it had a great nose with mulberries and plum along with an earthy note, spice and herb. The wine really draws you in and makes you want to sip it every time you smell it. There was so much to unpack with this wine which I loved.
The taste of this wine was even better. It was fruit-forward yet balanced with those earthy, meaty and herb flavours. Every sip I kept unpacking more about this wine. It has a great texture and volume to it too while being a little dark and mysterious. There was a good hit of tannin but this was balanced out by crisp acidity and fruit on the palate. I kept getting more and more from this wine sip after sip, and I loved every second of it!
What to enjoy it with
The Vino Intrepido Sagrantino 2020 is the kind of wine that is perfect with food. The bold flavours in the wine really lend themselves to a good meal. When it comes to pairing, you can’t go wrong with Italian classics. Think some red-based pizza, tomato sauce pasta or even braised meats. It would also go well with truffle dishes which is perfect for truffle season at the moment if you’re after something fancier!
In summary: Vino Intrepido Sagrantino 2020
The Vino Intrepido Sagrantino 2020 is a delicious wine that has a lot to unpack, which leaves you going back sip after sip to discover more.
