Fiano is one of those wines I don’t drink a lot of. But when I do I realise I really should be drinking more of it. I’ve tried the Fiano from Vino Intrepido before and loved it, so when I was sent the latest vintage Vino Intrepido Fiano 2020 to try I knew I was in for a treat.
James Scarcebrook started Vino Intrepido in 2016 because he was a wine lover who wanted to see what it was like to make wine. The project was for his interest, and he focused on making wines from Italian varieties using grapes from regions around Australia.
James is passionate about furthering the understanding and appreciation of both Italian wines and Italian grape varieties in Australia. He selects varieties that suit the Australian climate and soil, and also focuses on the region.
The Vino Intrepido Fiano 2020 is called Sting like a bee because it is said that in Roman times bees were attracted to the Fiano grapes which made up the Apianum wine named after bees in Latin. The wine with its high acidity and honey-like texture has a bit of a sting to it.
I feel like this is a great description for this wine and honestly, if bees stung like this maybe I wouldn’t be so scared of them. I really enjoyed unpacking this wine. Every sip brought new flavours to the forefront. It is rich yet vibrant and beautifully balanced.
The Vino Intrepido Fiano 2020 is full-bodied yet really refreshing. Notes of citrus, florals and spice came together beautifully. They were balanced by a slightly waxy texture with notes of honey. The finish is long and lingering, and it leaves you wishing you had another bottle.
This Fiano would be beautiful with food. Think of seafood pasta or creamy chicken in white wine.
The Vino Intrepido Fiano 2020 retails at around $33 a bottle and is available from the Vino Intrepido website.
