If you’ve been following along for a while you’ll know I am a fan of Vino Intrepido wines. I love everything about them – the story behind them, the striking labels, and the range of Italian varieties to try. James is bringing a bit of Italy to Victoria and I love his work! You can read my review of his Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese here.
So when he sent me a sample of his latest releases, I was so excited to try the new Vino Intrepido ‘Dulcet Tones’ Dolcetto 2021. This is one I’ve never tried before, and to be honest I haven’t had that much Dolcetto either. But after trying this wine I am wondering why on Earth that is. If you are like me, you may be in for a new favourite. Read on to find out why!
About Vino Intrepido
James Scarcebrook started Vino Intrepido in 2016 because he was a wine lover who wanted to see what it was like to make wine. The project was for his interest, and he focused on making wines from Italian varieties using grapes from regions around Australia. His love of wine shines through the finished product of his range of delicious and unique wines.
James is passionate about furthering the understanding and appreciation of both Italian wines and Italian grape varieties in Australia. He selects varieties that suit the Australian climate and soil, and also focuses on the region. His focus is on using his experience to make approachable and surprising wines.
James had been following a small vineyard in Daylesford for several years that produced Italian varieties, which is unusual for the Macedon region. After several years of asking, owners July & Peter finally sold him some fruit in 2021 and the Dolcetto was born. Mount Franklin Estate was planted on 500,000-year-old volcanic soils so you know you are in for a treat with this wine!
What I loved about the Vino Intrepido ‘Dulcet Tones’ Dolcetto 2021
Dolcetto is found mainly in the Piedmont region of north-western Italy where it is commonly harvested first. It is often second to the Nebbiolo of the region, being consumed while waiting for it to be ready due to how light and fresh it is. But I think Dolcetto is a great wine in its own right, and the Vino Intrepido ‘Dulcet Tones’ Dolcetto 2021 shows that!
The Vino Intrepido ‘Dulcet Tones’ Dolcetto 2021 is a really tasty, fresh red. I found it to be medium-bodied yet really refreshing. It is fruit-forward with notes of cherries, herb and spice. This follows through into the palate which has a lovely soft feel in the mouth yet nice and crisp on the finish. This wine is fresh and crunchy whilst being soft at the same time, delivering everything you need from a tasty Italian red.
Looking for a simply delicious food wine? I think you might have found what you’re looking for in this one.
What to enjoy it with
As I mentioned above, the Vino Intrepido ‘Dulcet Tones’ Dolcetto 2021 is crying out to be enjoyed with food. Although it is light enough that you could enjoy it on its own, I think this wine would truly shine when paired with a delicious meal. It would be something a little different to bring along to your next dinner with friends and sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
You couldn’t go past pairing this Dolcetto with classic Italian food. I think this wine would be perfect while digging into a big bowl of tomato-based pasta or a pizza or two with friends. It’s the kind of wine that is made for enjoying with those Italian flavours.
In summary: Vino Intrepido ‘Dulcet Tones’ Dolcetto 2021
The Vino Intrepido ‘Dulcet Tones’ Dolcetto 2021 is a delicious food wine that is right at home with an Italian feast. Just grab a bowl of pasta and enjoy those crunchy and refreshing yet smooth flavours in this wine.
