Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne is made for celebrating

Over the weekend we had a few celebrations of love. Between a wedding and celebrating an anniversary with my partner, it was definitely time for Champagne! Lucky for me my partner knows me well and came home with a bottle of bubbles on Sunday night for us to enjoy. However knowing that I’m always on the hunt for new things, he picked up a Champagne I’d never tried before: the Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Grande Reserve Brut Vertus Premier Cru NV.

If you think that is a mouthful in comparison to some of the other Champagne houses, you’d be right. But I was so excited to try something new and different that I couldn’t wait to get it into my glass. And once it was in there, it was gone all too quickly. Champagne is meant to be drunk though, right?

Celebrating with Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne

In order to be called Champagne, a wine must be from the Champagne region and have strict winemaking processes (you can read more about this here). I was a little confused by the bottle of the Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne if I’m honest. It said it was Champagne, but also had Premier Cru which is usually a term from Burgundy. For those of you diehard Champagne fans out there, I can confirm this is Champagne. But for most of you who only want to know if it tastes good, I can confirm it is absolutely delicious.

Sure, this bottle isn’t the cheapest wine I’ve had on the blog by far. Normally I will try to choose wines that are affordable, but this wine is certainly one that should be reserved for special occasions (unless you have an unlimited wine budget, in which case I’d like to know how I get your job). Sometimes you want a wine for something special, and there isn’t anything better for celebrating than Champagne.

If you are going to splurge on a bottle, you want to know it is good. Often this is why we lean towards the typical Champagne houses. However, it is good to sometimes try something different, new and exciting. The Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne is perfect if you want something special but also want something different.

Why I loved it

The Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne first off has such a cool bottle. It is all dark and moody with an embossed label that almost feels like leather or snakeskin. Even the design of the cage around the cork has been considered – it’s a bright blue which I’ve never seen before. So if you are a label lover like me, this might be enough to pique your interest.

But on to what was inside the bottle. The wine itself is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, but is mainly Chardonnay driven. This gives the wine the typical Champagne aromas of citrus, brioche and honey. As you dive into the glass of bright golden bubbles, you get a really delicious complex flavour. It has an intensity to it with great acidity of lemon, but a vibrancy from white peach and green pear. This is balanced by a nuttiness I really enjoyed at the end.

Translation? This wine makes your mouth water, it leaves you wanting more as you sip, and is oh so easy to drink. Trust me, this bottle won’t last long!

What to pair it with

The Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne is so versatile. We personally enjoyed it before dinner along with a bit of cheese, but you could also enjoy it on its own. I really enjoyed sipping on it without food myself because the flavours were quite complex and mouth-watering.

The wine’s balance of dryness, bubbles and a fruity creaminess also means that it will pair with many dining experiences. If you are on the hunt for cheese, try triple cream cheeses (French of course), or even goats cheese. Champagne also goes well with shellfish, oysters and smoked salmon. However, you could also pair it with veggie or egg-based dishes, depending on what you’re in the mood for.

Regardless of what you enjoy the Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne with, make sure it is a special occasion. Don’t share this delicious wine with just anybody!

The Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne is perfect for special occasions. If you are looking for something a bit different to try in that higher price bracket, I would definitely check this wine out. It may not be as well known as some of the other Champagne Houses, but this doesn’t make the Champagne any less delicious!

With such great flavours and a nice bottle to match, this wine would be the perfect gift or something to share with someone special. Make sure you don’t share it too much though, because it will be gone before you know it!
