I haven’t had many wines from Bendigo, so when I got an opportunity to sample the wines from Turners Crossing I was so excited. The Viognier was the first one I tried, but I wanted to soak up these last few weeks of colder weather with their Shiraz! We’ve been enjoying the cool change here in Brisbane (well cool for us). There’s been so much more opportunity for enjoying full-bodied winter warmers. And this Turners Crossing Shiraz 2016 definitely ticks all the boxes! Plus just look at that gorgeous label!
About Turners Crossing
Turners Crossing is located in Bendigo in Victoria and started in 2002. Since then they’ve been producing outstanding wines speaking to the sense of place by the Loddon River. The name honours a former local publican, Thomas Turner who purchased the site all the way back in 1868.
Turners Crossing produces a combination of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and the rare Italian variety Picoult. These grapes thrive in the well-drained, red sandy clay topsoil. The vineyard is virtually pesticide and chemical-free and warm days and cool nights provide ideal growing conditions.
What I loved about the Turners Crossing Shiraz 2016
The Turners Crossing Shiraz 2016 is seriously delicious, and a great buy given its affordable price point! It has a deep purple colour in the glass and fruit-forward aromas. Think dark fruits of plum and blackberry, along with an earthiness and a touch of smoke.
These notes pulled through into the palate but the best part about this wine was the texture. It drunk so smoothly with rounded notes and a nice long finish. This wine was rich with fruit that was balanced by those earthy flavours, pepper and a hint of leather. It had rounded tannins which I feel would really open up with a couple more years of ageing. But if you want to enjoy this wine now, it is drinking deliciously!
What to enjoy it with
The Turners Crossing Shiraz 2016 is definitely a food wine and a seriously affordable one at that! It would be perfectly at home at your next BBQ paired with steak or lamb. Grilled meats are a classic combination with Shiraz for a reason, and this wine is no different! This wine would be a great option to bring along for a catch up with friends as something different to try. We often jump in to the classic Barossa Shiraz, but there is so much more to discover from smaller regions.
In summary: Turners Crossing Shiraz 2016
The Turners Crossing Shiraz 2016 is a perfect food wine to pair with your next BBQ. Flavours of dark fruit and berries are paired beautifully with leather, smoke and spice. This wine has a rich mouthfeel with a smooth flavour and a good amount of tannin structure that will mean it will continue to develop with age. For under $30 it’s a great price for a tasty wine from a region you may not have tried before.
