You’ll enjoy it if: You don’t like your sparkling too dry
So our local bottle store does these weekly wine tastings that my partner and I have become regulars at. So much so that we are recognising the other regulars that seem to come along for the same reason. Does this make us sad? Maybe a little. But it’s a great way to try wines you never would normally try, and without them, I never would have tried the La Boheme Cuvee Blanc.
I’m not really one to seek out Australian sparkling often. I think this comes down to not being confident in what I’ll like, and worrying that it might be too sweet. I tend to opt for Italian (or Australian) Prosecco as a general rule. I know I like it and there’s a good chance it will be delicious. So when I got the opportunity to try a few of the wines from De Bertoli’s La Boheme range, I was blown away by how much I loved their sparkling. So much so that I had to buy a bottle to enjoy at home. Therefore offering free wine does work…on me anyway!
La Boheme Cuvee Blanc is the sparkling wine you’ve been looking for
The La Boheme Cuvee Blanc is a non-vintage sparkling wine from the Yarra Valley. All the wines from the La Boheme range are sourced from there, and I have to say they all surprised me with how delicious they were. Particularly as they retail at under $20 a bottle. Now I’m not one to discount big producers without trying them first, and this wine really impressed me. It goes to show that sometimes large producers can create really great drinking wines at affordable prices. Perfect for those occasions where you run into the local bottle store and have to grab something quickly!
This sparkling wine is made up predominately of Chardonnay grapes but also has a bit of Pinot Noir. It tastes quite different to the Proseccos I usually love, but really offered something different. You can definitely taste the Chardonnay dominance, but don’t let that food you. This drop holds it’s own with a complex flavour that is actually really balanced. Translation? Plain delicious.
Why I loved it
What’s not to love about an easy-drinking sparkling? Especially as we come into the warmer months, I find I’m often on the hunt for a decently priced sparkling that I actually enjoy drinking. The La Boheme Cuvee Blanc ticks all these boxes and comes in a really pretty bottle to match. You wouldn’t know it was under $20 with the nice and elegant label.
Now onto the wine stuff. You’ll get interesting flavours on the nose, with brioche and citrus, along with a hint of nuttiness. On the palate, it has a great amount of bubbles. It’s quite a complex wine, surprisingly, with a good balance between lemon citrus and apple flavours. The wine itself is quite crisp and vibrant to drink, which I have to say wasn’t something I was expecting.
Overall? This wine is a bottle of great drinking wine. Will it knock your socks off? Perhaps not. But is it affordable and delicious? Yes! Sometimes you just need something that won’t break the bank but is still going to be tasty, and this wine ticks all the boxes. It may not be Champagne, but it also leaves you some spare change for a damn good cheese platter.
What to enjoy it with
Speaking of cheese, the La Boheme Cuvee Blanc I think goes really well with a nice pre-dinner cheese platter. It’s my favourite way to enjoy sparkling, and the freshness of this wine really lends itself to this sort of drinking. You could also just as easily enjoy it before dinner with some friends. I like that it is so easy-drinking that you don’t even need to think twice about cracking open a bottle.
If you’re going to pair it with food, seafood would be your best bet. Think scallops or fresh oysters as they would go quite well.
Regardless of what you enjoy this wine with, you really don’t need to overthink it. Just sit back and enjoy the bubbles.
The final word on the La Boheme Cuvee Blanc
The La Boheme Cuvee Blanc is such a great find at under $20. It can be hard to find balanced sparkling wine at this price point, and I found this sparkling wine to be super easy to drink, refreshing and full of good times. At that price point, you don’t need to think twice about picking it up in the bottle store and popping it open, celebration or not! This wine could turn any day into a celebration with its delicious flavours and easy-going profile.
So the next time you’re in the bottle store unsure of what to buy, look out for this one. It won’t disappoint, and you’ll have plenty of spare change for another bottle or two! Or some snacks – or all of the above!
