Have you ever tried an Amarone style wine before? I have to admit this is a style that I learnt about in WSET2 but I had never tried one before. So when I got the chance to try this unique wine from Freeman Vineyards, I leapt at the opportunity! And I have to say I most certainly was not disappointed. This wine delivered flavour in spades and was everything I was hoping it would be an more. It was a truly memorable wine that offered something different.
Amarone style is a type of wine style from the Veneto region in Italy. Winemakers get the grapes and a portion of them are dried before being added to the fresh grapes during fermentation. The result is a wine with complex flavours and a beautiful texture and a dry style. Sound intriguing? Well, I think you’re going to love the Freeman Vineyards Secco Rondinella Corvina 2015 then!
About Freeman Vineyards
Freeman Vineyards is in the Hilltops region of New South Wales and was established in 1999 by viticulturist Dr Brian Freeman. Hilltops is in the southern region of New South Wales on top of a large area of granite rock – 150km long and 50km wide to be exact!
Freeman Vineyards is a 200-hectare estate with a high and cool location and granite soils ideal for growing grapes. With a focus on Italian varieties, this Vineyard has a range of beautiful wines to discover. Brian Freeman secured six cuttings of Rondinella and Corvina to establish Australia’s only planting of these grapes unique to the Veneto region of Northern Italy. These grapes are used to make the Freeman Vineyards Secco Rondinella Corvina 2015 using a mix of dried and fresh grapes.
What I loved about the Freeman Vineyards Secco Rondinella Corvina
There are so many reasons to love the Freeman Vineyards Secco Rondinella Corvina 2015. It has been aged to perfection prior to release, and so is one you can enjoy now or pop away for a bit longer with careful cellaring. I’d be interested to see how the wine further develops because honestly, it was delicious now!
The Freeman Vineyards Secco Rondinella Corvina 2015 is a full-bodied and intense wine with a beautiful velvety texture. I got notes of cherry and blackberry jam along with spices much like a panforte. The wine was fruity up front but had a beautiful savoury note and soft tannins. This wine was rich and complex and kept giving in terms of flavour. As it opened up it kept changing and I kept unpacking more complexity in what I was tasting. A nice long finish and a good hit of acidity really rounded out the wine beautifully.
This wine was certainly a special one and offered something unique to what you might be used to drinking. I loved how I could keep sipping and finding more and more unique notes to the wine. Each sip had a new complexity to unravel, and it made drinking this wine really enjoyable.
What to enjoy it with
We enjoyed the Freeman Vineyards Secco Rondinella Corvina 2015 over some board games and a cheese and antipasti platter. But I think this wine would be perfect with a good meal. As it is on the heavier side, I would recommend braised beef or another slow-cooked meat. Something rich and filling. This wine would be perfect along with some good winter comfort food.
In summary: Freeman Vineyards Secco Rondinella Corvina
The Freeman Vineyards Secco Rondinella Corvina 2015 was truly a special and unique wine to enjoy. It was rich and complex with flavours that you kept discovering sip after sip.
