You’ll enjoy it if: You like your Sangiovese on the heavier side
The Collector Wines Rose Red City Sangiovese 2016 is an absolutely delicious wine that pairs perfectly with food. It’s rich, fruity and savoury all at once, making it a complex wine that is a pleasure to drink. You’ll find it hard to stop at one glass with this one! Pair with pizza, pasta or rich meat dishes for the perfect Italian night with a fantastic wine!
This week I wanted to share with you a wine I seriously enjoyed all the way from the Canberra District. This wine region doesn’t get a whole lotta love on the Australian wine circuit – but it really should! I’ve gotten into it as my partner’s cousin lives down there and has made it her mission to show us all the great wine this region has to offer. As a result, each Christmas we are gifted with a fantastic wine from there and I am constantly blown away!
You all know Sangiovese is my jam, and this one from Collector Wines is no different! It caught my eye when I was introduced to their winery through the Drink Aussie Wine page. It sounded interesting and delicious, and let’s be honest, their website is like something out of a magazine which makes me want to try all their wines! So I decided it was the perfect opportunity to try their Sangiovese when we ordered Pizza from our favourite Pizza place one Saturday night.
The Collector Wines Rose Red City Sangiovese 2016 – rich goodness
Collector Wines began in 2005 with a focus on creating elegant, long-lived wines. The inspiration for their name actually comes from Canberra Artist Rosalie Gascoigne who captures the beauty of the Canberra landscape in her work. Their wineries are dotted across the Canberra district and region.
The Collector Wines Rose Red City Sangiovese 2016 is actually a blend of 91% Sangiovese and 8% Canaiolo Nero/Colorino/Mammolo/Malvasia Nera. Now I haven’t tried these grapes before, but if they helped create this fantastic wine then I am all about them! The grapes are hand-harvested and fermentation takes place in open fermenters which are worked by hand. There is a lot of love in this wine as a result!
Why I loved it
The Collector Wines Rose Red City Sangiovese 2016 is deep and rich, and delivers everything you want in a food wine. On the nose, you get a bit of spice and mulberry with a hint of smokey tobacco from this wines time in oak. When you taste the wine, you get the classic cherry flavour of Sangiovese and a good hit of tannin to balance it out. This wine left you wanting another sip. It is complex, deep and slightly savoury at the finish. I thought it was absolutely delicious and surprisingly easy to drink. I think the experience of drinking it was so enjoyable it was hard to restrain from pouring another glass!
So who would love this wine? Well if you are in the market for a really great food wine, this one is for you. It’s rich and complex with a good hit of tannins. It is a little on the heavier side of Sangiovese but this makes it the perfect wine for pairing with food. I found this wine to be surprising and delicious, leaving you wanting another sip!
The other great thing about the Collector Wines Rose Red City Sangiovese 2016 is that is already has a few years on it. This means the flavours have started to develop and change in the bottle, giving the wine some subtle smokey flavours and balancing out the tannin a bit. Why wait a few years for a wine to age when they’ve done it for you in this wine?
What to enjoy it with
The Collector Wines Rose Red City Sangiovese 2016 is best enjoyed with food! The perfect pairing for Sangiovese for me is pizza. I don’t think, other than pasta, you could find a more winning combination! Because this wine is a little heavier I suggest pairing with red-based pizza for the best result!
Because this wine is a little heavier, you could also pair it well with meat dishes. Think rich, roasted meats with tomato sauces. Tomatoes will really help to bring out the fruity flavours in the wine!
The final word on the Collector Wines Rose Red City Sangiovese 2016
The Collector Wines Rose Red City Sangiovese 2016 is a perfect food wine offering a complex and rich palate. Cherries, smokey tobacco and rich and savoury tannins, this wine is sure to keep you coming back for more. Pair it with pizza or pasta for a perfect Italian combination!
You can find this wine along with their other wines at the Collector Wines website.
Note: I was sent this wine as a sample and was under no obligation to post about it.
