A few weeks ago I wrote a bit of a guide to Riesling, and so I thought it was fitting that I review a delicious Riesling I enjoyed recently! It’s from the team at Campbells Wines, who also have a great Rosé and Trebbiano, I might add.

I’m not a big white wine drinker, but we’ve certainly been enjoying it more with this warmer weather. My partner loves a Chardonnay, which means we tend to lean towards this type of white. However, I was so excited to give a Riesling a try after so many Chardonnays in the Yarra Valley!

Campbells of Rutherglen Riesling 2019 is refreshing stuff

Campbells Wines is a family-owned vineyard dating back to 1870! That means they are 150 year’s old this year – how crazy is that?! You know with that much history and experience behind them that they are going to produce some incredible wines, and they seriously deliver.

For those of you who might not know, Rutherglen is a wine region in Victoria. The region is known for fortified wines, crisp whites and heavy reds – Shiraz, Durif and Cabernet. But they are also experimenting with new lesser-known varieties and producing some great wines, as well as plenty of whites!

Why I love it

Campbells of Rutherglen Riesling 2019

I’ve been a bit hesitant of Riesling because I always assume it’s going to be sweet. But this Campbells of Rutherglen Riesling 2019 was anything but! On the nose, you get a bit of sweetness from florals. However, this is balanced out by a hit of acidity from the smells of lemon, lime and a bit of orange. It’s lively from the first sniff!

Taste-wise, I loved how fresh this wine was. It has the floral flavours upfront and something like a lemon tart – that sort of sweet and tart flavour. I loved the balance between this and the zesty flavours of lemon and lime! It made for a really bright and refreshing wine. That acidity persisted to give the wine a great clean finish.

So why should you try this wine? Well if you are a fan of dry Riesling, this wine is for you. However, if you also are in the market for a super refreshing white that is better than a palate cleanser, look no further. The Campbells of Rutherglen Riesling 2019 delivers in flavour and freshness through every sip!

What to enjoy it with

Campbells of Rutherglen Riesling 2019

Personally I don’t think you need anything to enjoy this wine with. You could simple sip on it over a summer afternoon to relax in the sun. We enjoyed it at the beach and I can definitely recommend this!

If you are keen for some food, some light seafood would be perfect. Think lightly fried calamari or a simple grilled white fish. Riesling is a great food wine and so it could also be easily paired with spicy Asian cuisine or even cured meats and cheeses.

Riesling is also ripe for cellaring, so even though the Campbells of Rutherglen Riesling 2019 is great for drinking now, you could also easily cellar it for up to 10 years to further develop the flavours.

The final word on the Campbells of Rutherglen Riesling 2019

The Campbells of Rutherglen Riesling 2019 is perfect if you love a dry Riesling but also great for lovers of crisp white wine. It is the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, not going overboard on either front. The result? A crisp and refreshing white that is perfect for Summer. This wine delivers freshness in spades and is perfect for those afternoons where you want a nice glass of wine to cool down, or want to enjoy something with a light meal.
