Wine review: Xavier Wine Pa Pa Pinot Gris 2024

I recently had the chance to try the Xavier Wine Pa Pa Pinot Gris 2024 from Mount Gambier, and I have to say it reminded me that I should be drinking more Pinot Gris. It’s not something I tend to go to immediately, but this wine made me rethink that, especially now that the weather is heating up here!

Made from fruit direct-pressed for a soft extraction, this wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel before being left on lees for five months to add gentle texture and a subtle yeasty layer. The result is a wine that perfectly balances freshness and complexity. It’s bright and pure, but with enough depth to keep each sip interesting.

In the glass, the Xavier Wine Pa Pa Pinot Gris 2024 shows a golden hue with a tinge of light pink, and the aromas are wonderfully expressive: think ripe peach, pear, apple, a dash of citrus and a touch of florals. The palate delivers those same juicy fruits with added layers of freshly baked brioche and a hint of richness. There’s also a lovely spice to it that makes it feel both vibrant and textural. It’s generous yet refreshing, with a crunchy acidity that keeps everything lifted and mouthwatering. A true expression of Pinot Gris that would shine alongside seafood, creamy pasta or even a fragrant Thai salad.

About Xavier Wine

At the heart of Xavier Wine is winemaker Xavier Goodridge’s belief that great wine begins in the vineyard and should speak honestly of the land it comes from. In Gippsland’s Maffra, on a vineyard first planted in 1987, Xavier has spent years nurturing the soils back to life through organic farming, creating a landscape where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive with character and purity. His approach in the winery is refreshingly simple with minimal intervention, gentle ageing in old French oak, and a trust in the natural process. This allows the fruit to shine without distraction. Beyond his home vineyard, Xavier’s PA PA range celebrates friendships and collaboration with like-minded growers in Mount Gambier and Henty, regions whose limestone soils bring a unique vibrancy to the wines. Together, these expressions reflect not just Xavier’s craft, but his vision of wine as a story of place, people, and the joy of connection.
