Wine review: Tyrrell’s 2023 Vat 9 Shiraz
When getting the opportunity to taste wines like this, it makes me even more grateful to be back enjoying wine again after a long nine months! Wines like this one remind me just how much I missed it. The Tyrrell’s 2023 Vat 9 Shiraz is from the Winemaker’s selection range, their flagship collection of wines considered to be Australian icons. Created by third-generation Murray Tyrrell in 1962, the wines are inspired by the old-vine vineyard assets within the Tyrrell Family Estate, Ashmans. They represent the epitome of winemaking at Tyrrell’s and are known for their ageability. I was sent a few of this range to try, and it was hard to know where to start. But I thought beginning with a classic Hunter Valley Shiraz made sense, and I was really blown away!
What I love about the Tyrrell’s 2023 Vat 9 Shiraz is that it is surprisingly approachable now, and can be enjoyed young, but could also be aged for years, depending on what you prefer. It’s sourced from the best parcels of the vintage on the Tyrrell Family Estate, dating back to 1892. There is so much to unpack in this wine, with notes of spice, cherry and plum on the nose. These lead into the palate, which is fresh and bright with velvety tannins. It’s beautifully balanced yet surprisingly approachable, and its medium weight means it isn’t as overwhelming as some other Shiraz. It has everything you’d want from a great food wine, with mouth-filling flavours and concentration, yet brightness that balances it all out. Whether you want to enjoy it now or patiently wait for this wine to continue developing, you are in for a treat.
About Tyrrell’s
Tyrell’s is a bit of an Aussie institution from the Hunter Valley, and it is easy to see why! Their rich history dates all the way back to 1858 when Edward Tyrell arrived in the Hunter Valley and planted Shiraz and Semillon.
160 plus years on, Tyrell’s has been a constant in both the Hunter Valley and Australian wine industries. From pioneering wine varieties to helping establish Hunter Valley Semillon as one of the world’s most iconic wines. Now they have deep respect for their foundations whilst looking to the future.
