Wine review: Tyrrell’s 2023 Vat 63 Chardonnay Semillon

I’ve been making my way through the new Tyrrell’s Winemaker’s Selection range, and one that really stood out recently was the Tyrrell’s 2023 Vat 63 Chardonnay Semillon. This wine is said to be one of the most unique in the Tyrrell’s lineup as it’s made purely because the family and team love the style so much, and it’s easy to see why. The blend combines Chardonnay (55%) from the HVD Vineyard and Semillon (45%) from Stevens. The Chardonnay was matured in mostly older French oak barriques, while the Semillon was crafted in a traditional unwooded style. The blend of the two is a lovely balance between richness and freshness.

In the glass, the Tyrrell’s 2023 Vat 63 Chardonnay Semillon shows off the best of both varieties. The nose is beautifully expressive, with ripe peach and lemon, underpinned by a hint of oak and lovely complexity. On the palate, there’s a beautiful richness from the Chardonnay, balanced by the vibrant acidity and length of the Semillon. It’s layered and refined, yet still so easy to drink. This is a wine that would shine alongside anything from roasted chicken to creamy seafood pasta, or even just enjoyed on its own on a sunny afternoon.
