Wine review: Tyrrell’s Stevens Semillon 2018
Recently I was sent the latest release from Tyrell’s and the wines looked so good it was hard to know where to start. The Hunter Valley is renowned for its Semillon, and having tried previous vintages of their single vineyard range I decided to check out the Tyrrell’s Stevens Semillon 2018 first. And I was rewarded with quite the sipping experience! The Stevens vineyard is usually the first Semillon vineyard to be picked, and has some plantings dating back to 1911! What I also love about this wine is that it is released with a few years of age on it, so you get to start to enjoy some of the older Semillon characteristics that truly make this wine shine.
On the nose, the Tyrrell’s Stevens Semillon 2018 has a dominant lemon aroma that’s nice and fresh. This follows through into the palate where lemon dominates with a lemon-curd note along with green apple and nice minerality. The palate has racy acidity but also is showing some of the richness from the few years of aging. As it is a little older, it’s medium-bodied with intense flavours and a hint of roundness. This wine is beautiful from start to finish with persistent length, and perfect for pairing for food. You could enjoy it now or hold on to it to allow some more of those beautiful Semillon flavours to develop.
About Tyrrell’s
Tyrell’s is a bit of an Aussie institution from the Hunter Valley, and it is easy to see why! Their rich history dates all the way back to 1858 when Edward Tyrell arrived in the Hunter Valley and planted Shiraz and Semillon.
160 plus years on, Tyrell’s has been a constant in both the Hunter Valley and Australian wine industries. From pioneering wine varieties to helping establish Hunter Valley Semillon as one of the world’s most iconic wines. Now they have deep respect for their foundations whilst looking to the future.
