It’s complex flavours of red and black fruit, spice and earthiness create a really tasty blend.
This week I wanted to share a delicious red wine from Taltarni. I’ve enjoyed many of their sparkling wines in the past – this is how I was introduced to their label, but recently I’ve had the chance to sample their reds. Let me tell you, they are all winners! But this Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre really knocked my socks off, and for such a great price I think it’s worth letting you all know too!
The Taltarni Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2019 is simply delicious
The Taltarni Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2019 is from their ‘dynamic’ range of wines that represent the style, taste and artistic expression of their winemakers. Grenache was planted in 2016 with this blend in mind, and careful picking throughout the season meant the grapes that went into this wine were perfectly ripe and better than the sum of its parts. Eight months in oak contributed to the flavours of the wine and produced a beautiful blend that drinks oh so well now.
Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre is a classic blend as you get the fruity flavours of the Grenache, the Shiraz adds intensity and body, and the Mourvedre ties it all together. As a result, you have a balanced and absolutely delicious wine with complex fruit, earthy and spiced flavours. You’ll find all of this and more in the Taltarni Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2019.
Why I loved it
What surprised me about the Taltarni Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2019 was the colour. It was deep plum and quite dark in the glass, which made me think the wine was going to be heavier than it actually was. The wine itself was actually medium-bodied with a great balance between the flavours. I got a hit of fresh red fruits like cherry and plum, as well as blackberries. This was balanced out by a nice spiced aroma and earthiness in the palate. This wine was such a great blend of the three varieties and left you wanting sip after sip. I also loved that the flavours lingered for a long time after each sip.
So who would love this wine? I honestly think this wine is very approachable and most would enjoy it. If you like lighter style red, you’ll still find this wine refreshing and bright, and if you like heavier reds it still has great spice and a bit of weight from the earthy flavours. Really it is a great all-rounder sitting in the middle of the two extremes and pleasing all palates. And at $26 a bottle, it’s pretty affordable for something so delicious!
What to enjoy it with
The Taltarni Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2019 could easily be enjoyed with or without food. It is very approachable and delicious, so a great option for enjoying with friends. It’s also a perfect wine for those times you’re really craving a glass during the week. It’s the sort of wine that’s great to have on hand and crack open when you want something you know is going to hit the spot.
If you’re pairing it with food you’re in luck because this wine will go with plenty of options. Whether it is a roasted meat and vegetable dish, steak or bbq, or even a tomato-based pasta. It is a very approachable wine and with so many flavours it will pair with many dishes. I would avoid anything too light like a salad or light chicken dish with this one though. The dish will need a bit more body to pair with the flavour intensity in this wine. Personally I can’t think of a better pairing than a big bowl of pasta and a big glass of this wine.
