On Friday afternoon I wanted to celebrate the last Friday of work for the year. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this than with a glass of bubbles! I’d been meaning to try the latest release of Taltarni Blanc de Blancs 2016 for a while as I had their 2015 at the start of the year. It seemed fitting that I round off the year with the same!
I feel like my consumption of bubbles has risen substantially in the past few weeks, and it’s something I’m totally ok with. Everyone wants to celebrate this crazy year being over, and sipping on some delicious sparkling is the perfect way to do it! The great thing about Taltarni sparkling is that you are getting the Champagne flavours from their use of the traditional grape varieties and the traditional method. However, you don’t have to pay the same premium to get wines which are really affordable and seriously enjoyable!
About Taltarni
I’ve always been a fan of Taltarni sparkling ever since I discovered their wines at a Good Food and Wine show many years ago. Now after trying their red wines this year I am a huge fan of all their wines! Their reds were some of the most memorable ones I had this year. However, their sparkling wines always nail it for me. The Taltarni Blanc de Blancs 2016 was no different!
Taltarni released their first wine in 1977 and had immediate award wins. They are located in the Pyrenees, a perfect spot for the production of high-quality grapes. The cool nights and warm days allow for the slow ripening of the grapes for perfect flavours.
Their winery is founded on the principles of individuality, independence and expression, combining old-world traditions with new-world techniques. The result? High quality red and white wines and traditional method sparklings for us to enjoy!
Why I loved the Taltarni Blanc de Blancs 2016
The Taltarni Blanc de Blancs 2016 is made using 100% Chardonnay grapes from the Pyrenees, Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. I find this mixing of regions really interesting and think it really adds to the flavour profile. If you are a Chardonnay hater, don’t be put off by the use of Chardonnay grapes here. Chardonnay is one of the key grapes used in Champagne, and I can guarantee you won’t find the same flavours in this wine that you’d find in a glass of still Chardonnay!
What I loved about this wine so much was how refreshing it was. It was crisp and zippy across the palate, leaving you wanting sip after sip. Flavours and aromas of crisp apple, minerality and citrus were balanced out by brioche and a hint of cinnamon that comes from using the traditional method. It was an acidic wine but this was so nicely balanced with the flavours that it just left you with a super refreshing drop.
If you are looking for something refreshing for your Summer celebrations, look no further than this great wine from Taltarni. It offers something different to a Prosecco or other Sparkling wine in that you get the complexity in flavour from the traditional method to complement the zippiness in the wine. And at $26 a bottle, this wine isn’t going to break the bank as a Champagne might!
What to enjoy it with
The Taltarni Blanc de Blancs 2016 is perfect for Summer celebrations. Its refreshing palate would be perfect for sipping before a long lunch or in between lunch and dinner. You can definitely enjoy this wine without food. We had a great time watching the sunset and sipping on this drop on Friday, and I think this is a great way to enjoy this wine!
If you’re looking for a food pairing, the perfect pick would be seafood like oysters. The crispness in this wine really lends it to fresh seafood, which makes it a perfect pairing if this is what you serve on Christmas day!
In summary: Taltarni Blanc de Blancs 2016
The Taltarni Blanc de Blancs 2016 is a great wine for enjoying at Summer celebrations. It’s affordable but offers a real quality in the flavours and structure. I enjoyed every sip. It is refreshing whilst complex with the balance between crisp apple and brioche. Whether you want to enjoy it with or without food, this wine is perfect for celebrating the end of a crazy year!
