Ever enjoy wine and think – what an incredible experience? I was absolutely blown away by the Soumah 2019 Equilibrio Pinot Noir. I was lucky enough to try their Chardonnay last year and it was one of my favourite wines of the year. So when I got the chance to try not only the new Equilibrio Chardonnay and the Equilibrio Pinot Noir, I leapt at the opportunity! And I also used lockdown as the perfect excuse to enjoy a special occasion wine – because why not right?
I’ve been a fan of Soumah Wines for quite some time and it is easy to see why with wines like this. We actually visited their winery with our bridal party the day before our wedding and had a very special lunch! Enjoying this wine took me back to that day. Soumah is known for experimenting with Italian varietals but they also produce some incredible Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon to name a few.
The Equilibrio Range is wines that promote the very best barrels, clonal mix and new oak integration. These wines are all about harmony and balance which is why they aren’t called Reserve wines!
The Soumah 2019 Equilibrio Pinot Noir is a special occasion wine at $80 a bottle. But it is the perfect wine for those times. In the vineyard small parcels of MV6, D4V2 and 777 Pinot Noir clones were pruned for lower yields and had a green harvest to keep fruit levels low. The result is more flavour in the fruit you get which results in seriously good wine!
What I loved most about enjoying this wine was that it really opened up as we drunk it. It was full of earthiness at the start but as it sat out for a bit the wine changed and created a new taste sensation. This wine was elegant and finely structured with complexity that kept you guessing. It was fruity and earthy all in one with a beautiful spice at the back that lingered long after you took a sip.
Keep it for a couple of years, give it as a nice gift, or enjoy it now. There are so many options with this wine and they are all good ones!
