Wine review: Sons of Eden Remus Shiraz 2018
Recently I was sent two Shiraz’s from Sons of Eden, one from the Barossa and one from Eden Valley. Despite both being the same variety, same year and both using old vines, each wine offers different flavour profiles from the Eden Valley and Barossa Valley from an exceptional vintage. I absolutely loved the Romulus Shiraz (read my review here), so I knew I was in for a treat with the Sons of Eden Remus Shiraz 2018. And I was definitely right!
Like the Remus, this is a special occasion wine. It isn’t a midweek wine price point, but the quality is up there making it worth the spend. Drinking this wine is an experience in itself, and would enhance any special meal with that special someone. This isn’t a wine you should share with just anyone! Like the Romulus, this wine would pair beautifully with roast meat, and the pepper would also make it a great pair with a really nice steak (like a fancy one, not your backyard BBQ kind. Unless that’s your jam and then go for it!)
The Sons of Eden Remus Shiraz 2018 is a little different to the Romulus Shiraz in that I found it to be a little softer and refined, while the Romulus is bold and powerful. On the nose, it has notes of bright cherry, dried herb and classic pepper. This follows through into the palate which is rich and concentrated yet soft and rounded. It has a beautiful elegance to it, beautifully balanced and focused. It is complex yet beautifully balanced and delivered sip after sip.
We actually tried the 2013 vintage of this wine while we were in the Barossa Valley and it was amazing how much it had developed. The savoury characteristics really came through and this wine seemed bolder than even the Romulus! It was so interesting to see the potential for aging in this wine.
About Sons of Eden
Established in 2000, Sons of Eden is intimately involved in all aspects of crafting wines of unquestionable quality, from the vineyard right through to the bottle. Varieties are hand-picked from 30 unique vineyard sites and handled through their minimal intervention small-batch winery. This gives the wines a strong sense of individuality. With a combined 50 Barossa vintages amassed between the Sons, Corey Ryan and Simon Cowham, their focus on crafting world-class wines is uncompromising. Their multitude of awards is proof of their incredible wines.
The Romulus and Remus old vine Shiraz were created to represent the best example of Shiraz from the two distinct Barossa regions: Eden Valley and Barossa Valley. These wines are the Sons of Eden flagship wines and are only released in exemplary years. They’re named after the fable from Ancient Rome, with Romulus being the stronger and more powerful twin, and Remus being more refined, focused and elegant. These twins characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the Twin Valleys of the Barossa.
You can purchase this wine from The Sons of Eden website. This wine is also available at select retailers.
Note: This wine was sent as a sample. I was under no obligation to post about it.Β
