Wine review: Scarborough Offshoot Tempranillo Joven
It’s been a little while since I’ve had a Tempranillo, so I was excited to get the opportunity to try the Scarborough Offshoot Tempranillo Joven. I haven’t tried the Offshoot range from Scarborough before, but it is a range from Winemaker Jerome Scarborough, Ian and Merralea’s son, who is experimenting with new and exciting varieties and styles of wine. This Tempranillo is just that as it’s made to be drunk young and fresh. It’s easy-drinking and simply delicious, and could easily be paired with anything from tapas and cured meats to even a nice simple pasta.
On the nose, the Scarborough Offshoot Tempranillo Joven is packed full of fresh fruit notes. Think Cherry, Plum and Raspberry. These fruit notes follow through into the palate which is lovely and bright. It has smooth tannins and a nice, crisp acidity that makes it a nice and refreshing wine. The finish is clean and makes this wine all too easy to drink. It’s simply tasty, and there’s not much more you could want from a wine that’s made for enjoying now.
About Scarborough Wine Co
Scarborough was created from blood, sweat, tears and several glasses of Chardonnay, so it seems fitting to enjoy their wine on International Chardonnay Day. In the 60’s Ian ‘Scarbie’ Scarborough met Merralea in the Barossa Valley. Three years later they married and then moved to the Hunter Valley to make it their home. By the end of the 70’s they purchased the Gillards Road Property to start their own wine company.
They decided their vision for the future rested on Chardonnay and got rid of all the Shiraz previously planted there. The first vintage was in 1987 and the small amount of wine was made in the garage of the house where the cellar door is today.
Fast forward to today where Scarborough Wine Co. is an established name amongst the finest in the Hunter Valley and a must-visit cellar door. They’ve expanded beyond Chardonnay to Pinot along with plenty of new varieties.
