Wine review: Scarborough 2020 Yellow Label Chardonnay

I am always down for a glass of Chardonnay, and today is the perfect excuse as it’s International Chardonnay Day. This is a wine day I can definitely get behind. And what better way to celebrate than with a great Chardonnay like this one? The Scarborough 2020 Yellow Label Chardonnay is an iconic Australian Chardonnay from the Hunter Valley, from Scarborough which specialises in Chardonnay. Look no further than this tasty drop for those who love rich and creamy Chardonnay that’s still beautifully integrated. And the best part? It’s under $30 a bottle, which is super affordable for a wine that’s so delicious.

On the nose, the Scarborough 2020 Yellow Label Chardonnay is nicely aromatic. Notes of honey-roasted cashews, grapefruit and peach come together with a hint of fig. The palate is complex yet nicely balanced between the oak influence and fruit with notes of that toasted cashew coming through alongside peach and melon. The texture is rich and creamy, giving this wine a wonderfully full flavour with plenty to unpack. It’s simply delicious from start to finish and would go perfectly with roast chicken or even a risotto. Sounds like the perfect way to celebrate International Chardonnay Day to me!

About Scarborough Wine Co

Scarborough was created from blood, sweat, tears and several glasses of Chardonnay, so it seems fitting to enjoy their wine on International Chardonnay Day. In the 60’s Ian ‘Scarbie’ Scarborough met Merralea in the Barossa Valley. Three years later they married and then moved to the Hunter Valley to make it their home. By the end of the 70’s they purchased the Gillards Road Property to start their own wine company.

They decided their vision for the future rested on Chardonnay and got rid of all the Shiraz previously planted there. The first vintage was in 1987 and the small amount of wine was made in the garage of the house where the cellar door is today.

In the 90’s they released their most ubiquitous Chardonnay – the Yellow Label that this review is about! Word spread as Scarborough gained popularity and appeared in some of Sydney’s finest restaurants. Many still serve it today.

Fast forward to today where Scarborough Wine Co. is an established name amongst the finest in the Hunter Valley and a must-visit cellar door. They’ve expanded beyond Chardonnay to Pinot along with plenty of new varieties.
